VINTON PLANS CHRISTMAS FESTIVITIES

Plans for a festive Christmas celebration in Vinton are taking shape with a tree lighting, the annual Christmas parade, lunch with Santa and a day of merrymaking in the downtown area.

The activities also will include collecting nonperishable food to be distributed to the poor. The food will be collected at Vinton's Farmers Market and will be distributed through the Vinton Police Department's Needy Family Program.

The Christmas parade is tonight at 7 and will be the first of three in the Roanoke area during the next three days. Salem's parade will be Friday, and Roanoke's will be Saturday.

Vinton's pre-parade activities will start at 6 p.m. with the lighting of the "Housecall Hospice Memorial Dove Tree" at the Municipal Building. The tree is made possible by Housecall Hospice, Berkshire Health Care Center, Willard Hamill and the town of Vinton.

Entertainment will be provided by the youth choir of Thrasher Memorial United Methodist Church, the children's choir of Vinton Baptist Church and the Southernettes Baton Corp.

Vinton Old-Fashioned Holly Day will be Saturday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the downtown area with crafters, carolers, bake sales, wagon rides, bingo for children and lunch with Santa.

Craft shows will be at the Farmers' Market and V.F.W. Post 4522.

"Pinacle,'' a Christian music group, will provide entertainment between 11 a.m. and 2 p.m at the Farmers' Market. Beginning at 11 a.m., children's bingo will be at O'Dell's Restaurant, where Santa will have lunch with youngsters at noon.

Wagon rides will be available throughout the day at no charge.

As part of the Christmas festivities, businesses in the downtown area will decorate their store fronts with lights, banners and other festive items.
