IN SCHOOL

BILLY WALSHE, a third-grader at Cave Spring Elementary, was among the winners in the First Virginia Bank's 1996 Virginia Student Art Calendar Competition.

Walshe, whose art will be featured for January, won a $150 savings account.

THE NORTHSIDE HIGH SCHOOL'S MARCHING BAND, recently earned several awards in competition.

The band won several first places - for music, marching and maneuvering, first general effect - in the Preview of the Champions at William Byrd High School and Lord Botetourt High School's Cavalier Classic Festival of Bands

In the Byrd competition, Northside also was first for drum major and Division A and received an overall rating of excellent. In the Botetourt, the band was first in Division AA, received a superior rating and was named Band of the Day in divisions A and AA. The band also earned a superior rating at the State Band Festival, sponsored by the Virginia Band and Orchestra Directors Association, at Pulaski County High School.
