PENN STATE RIPS VMI

Pete Lisicky scored a career-high 26 points Thursday as Penn State crushed VMI 99-73 in State College, Pa.

Lisicky made nine of 14 field-goal attempts, including 6-of-9 on 3-pointers, also a career best. Calvin Booth added 13 points, five rebounds and five blocks for Penn State (3-0).

Freshman foward Brent Conley led VMI (1-2) with a career-high 27 points. Bryan Taueg came off the bench to add 12 for the Keydets.

The Nittany Lions jumped out to a 20-6 lead and finished the first half shooting 6-of-9 from 3-point range, building a lead as large as 21 points.

VMI scored the last five points of the half to cut the Lions' advantage to 16.

Maurice Spencer hit a 3-pointer at the start of the second half to cut the lead to 13, but VMI pulled no closer.

Penn State shot better than 58 percent from the field in the second half, including 4-of-8 on 3-pointers. Penn State never trailed.

In other men's games:

No. 13 Missouri 66, SMU 51: In Columbia, Mo., Simeon Haley scored 13 points to lead four Missouri players in double figures as the Tigers (3-0) dropped the Mustangs (1-2).

Troy Mathews scored 18 points for SMU, the Mustangs' only player in double figures, and 5-foot-10 guard Jemeil Rich had nine rebounds.

SMU finished 16-of-52 (31 percent) from the field, the third straight opponent the Tigers have held to less than 40 percent.

Haley, a 7-foot-center, has been in double figures in scoring and rebounds in all three games.

Kelly Thames scored 10 points and led Missouri with nine rebounds. Julian Winfield added 12 points and Derek Grimm had 10.

No. 25 Arkansas 103, North Carolina A&T 49: In Fayetteville, Ark., Jesse Pate scored 14 points in Arkansas' 31-2 run early in the second half and the Razorbacks broke a two-game losing streak with a victory over the Aggies.

Arkansas (2-2) had a 45-24 lead when it went on the run that sealed the rout. The Razorbacks made 11 of 14 field-goal attempts during the run, while the Aggies (1-1) committed 13 turnovers and only got off five shots.

The Aggies, who trailed by 50 points with 10:51 to play, finished with 39 turnovers.

Kareem Reid had eight assists and eight points in the first half as Arkansas built a 44-24 lead. He finished with 12 points. Pate led the Razorbacks with 20 points, while Landis Williams added 11.

Hampden-Sydney 65, Washington and Lee 60: The Tigers scored eight straight points to break away from a 53-53 tie with the Generals in an Old Dominion Athletic Conference game in Hampden-Sydney.

W&L has lost seven straight games to open the season and is 0-1 in the ODAC. Chris Couzen paced the Generals with 16 points. Cam and Kelly Dyer each scored 12 for W&L.

The Generals led 29-21 at halftime and led 35-23 early in the second half. But Hampden-Sydney (4-0, 1-0) rallied behind freshmen Alex Robbins and Maurice Ross, who each scored 16 points.

Virginia Commonwealth 81, Xavier 75: In Richmond, George Byrd scored 17 points and added three blocked shots in the final 1:40 as the Rams (3-1) beat the Musketeers (1-1).

The Rams (3-1) dominated the first half, leading at one point 48-29.

Sherman Hamilton led the Rams with 18 points and seven assists, while Bernard Hopkins had 10 rebounds and nine points.

Xavier got 19 points from Sherwin Anderson, 16 from Kevin Carr and 12 from Gary Lumpkin.

North Carolina State 99, Wofford 60: In Raleigh, N.C., Curtis Marshall regained his outside shooting touch, scoring 14 points as the Wolfpack pounded the Terriers.

The Wolfpack (3-0) has won three straight by an average of 38 points per game. Meanwhile, the Terriers fell to 0-3 in their first season in Division I-A.

Todd Fuller added 19 points for the Wolfpack, including 11-for-11 from the foul line, while Danny Strong had 18.

Women

Bridgewater 88, Hollins 40: Cindy Pearson scored a game-high 22 points to lead the Eagles (2-3, 1-1) past Hollins in an ODAC game in Bridgewater.

Hollins (0-4, 0-2) was led by Katherine Sears, who scored 11.

Eastern Mennonite 78, Lynchburg 73: Laurie Miller scored 20 points on seven of nine field-goal shooting as the Royals downed the Hornets in an ODAC game in Harrisonburg.
