SCOUT'S GIFT SETS HIM APART FROM THE PACK

Cameron Johnson wanted to honor the leaders of his Cub Scout Pack 239 Webelos, but he wasn't satisfied with the usual Christmas gift ideas.

So he made a Good Neighbors Fund contribution in honor of Ginny Savitz and Eleanor Wells, who have been his leaders for five years.

Cameron said he couldn't think of gifts for them, so he decided to make a donation to the fund.

Eleven-year-old Cameron, son of William and Ann Johnson, is a fifth-grader at Crystal Spring Elementary School and is president of his own custom computer printing company, Cheers & Tears Printing Co. He prints cards, stationery and calendars for customers in Roanoke and several other cities.

That enables him to have his own checking account, said Ann Johnson. It also gives his parents more opportunities to teach him about financial responsibilities.

Also, said Ann Johnson, by honoring his leaders with a donation to The Good Neighbors Fund, Cameron gets to practice one of Scouting's most important ideals: service to others.

"We are trying to teach him to think of others, in his heart, on a year-round basis," his mother said. ``Children must learn that somewhere in their lives; the knowledge of giving doesn't automatically happen at age 18. One must start learning earlier in life.''
