NS SHUFFLES 30-YEAR MEN

NORFOLK SOUTHERN'S MECHANICAL department will have a new boss today; the old boss will move into research and testing.

Norfolk Southern Corp. on Thursday named a new chief of its Roanoke-based mechanical department, which employs nearly 1,200 workers, or about a third of the railroad's Roanoke Valley work force.

Jon L. Manetta was put in charge of the maintenance of cars, locomotives and standing facilities throughout the railroad system, effective today. This will be in addition to overseeing the operation of all trains, a job he has had for a year. Manetta, 56, a vice president, will continue to work in Norfolk, where the company has its headquarters.

NS also said its former mechanical department chief, Donald W. Mayberry, will oversee research and testing, also based in Roanoke. He replaces Powell Sigmon, who retired Oct. 31. Mayberry, 52, also a vice president, will continue working in Roanoke.

Manetta and Mayberry each have more than 30 years with Norfolk Southern and its predecessor companies. Both are 1965 graduates of Virginia Tech.
