KING SLIPS IN RUNNING FOR SENIOR TOUR

Roanoker Billy King faces an uphill battle today in his bid to earn an exemption on the Senior PGA Tour for the 1996 season.

King, competing in the Senior PGA Tour qualifying tournament at Rancho Mirage, Calif., slipped a bit in Thursday's round, shooting a 2-over-par 72 after standing at 4-under through the first two rounds. King's three-round total is 211, which has him in a tie for 26th place and eight strokes behind leader Frank Conner.

King, the head professional at Blue Hills Golf Course, must place in the top eight after today's final round to earn a full exemption on the tour. He must place in the top 16 to earn a partial exemption.

nGiles High School linebacker Brandon Steele, a 5-foot-10, 235-pound senior who is the defensive leader for the 11-1 Spartans, had cartilage removed from his right knee Tuesday and is questionable for Saturday's Group A Division 2 semifinal game at Powell Valley.

``He's walking on it, but he can't straighten it,'' Giles coach Steve Ragsdale said. ``I don't see how he could play.''

Roanoke College women's soccer forward Meredith Arnott heads a list of six area college players named to the NSCAA/Umbro All America South Region team.

Arnott, a junior from Burke, was selected to the first team, while teammates Lisa Franzino, a midfielder, and Kara Hedges, a goalkeeper, made the second and third teams, respectively. Also on the third team were Washington and Lee's Nicole Johnson and Michelle Bauman and Ferrum's Susan Sautter.
