UTAPENDA NINI?: That's Swahili for ``What would you like?'' If your answer is African-inspired jewelry, crafts, literature, games, decorations and other items for Christmas and Kwanzaa, you may find them at the fifth annual Holiday Shopping Bazaar today through Sunday at the Harrison Museum of African American Culture, Roanoke. Today's hours are 5-9 p.m.; Saturday's are 10 a.m. - 8 p.m., with Santa visiting from 3-6 p.m.; and Sunday's are 1-5 p.m. Discounts, door prizes and special performances also will be offered. COUNTRIFIED CHRISTMAS: A collection of high-stepping cloggers and 24 bands, playing bluegrass, gospel and old-time music, will perform from 7 to 11 Saturday night during the Roanoke Fiddle and Banjo Club's Big Christmas Show. There is no admission charge for the event at the Roanoke Civic Center Auditorium, but donations would be appreciated. Call 375-3949.
AFRICAN ARTS: The UJIMA dance company will be featured, along with storytelling, an African fashion show and refreshments, in a celebration of African dance and culture Saturday at 7:30 p.m. in Christ Episcopal Church in Blacksburg. The admission charge of $4 for adults and $1 for children under 12 will help provide Christmas dinner at a Sudanese refugee camp in Kenya. For more information, call the church at 552-2411.
OPEN-HOUSE CALLS: On Sunday, two local retirement communities will host holiday celebrations. Light refreshments will be served and the Roanoke Youth Symphony String Quartet will play holiday and classical music from 2-4 p.m. at the Richfield Retirement Community in Salem. Harpist Song Hee Uhm will perform from 2:30 p.m. - 4 p.m. at The Park Oak Grove in Roanoke. Art by members of the League of Roanoke Artists also will be shown, and there will be a dessert buffet. WHITE NIGHT: Hollins College's White Gift Service - a traditional celebration of Advent and Christmas music begun in 1921 - will this year feature the music of English composer Benjamin Britten. Four Scripture readings will be interwoven into musical performances by the Hollins College Chapel Choir. The event is free, but an offering will be taken to benefit local, national and international charities selected by the Hollins community. A reception and refreshments will follow the service. PAGEANT PRACTICE: You need a ticket to get into First Baptist Church's Roanoke Christmas Pageant, but they're all gone. You don't need a ticket, however, to get into the pageant's dress rehearsal at 7:15 p.m. Monday in the church at Third Street and Franklin Avenue, Roanoke. Seating will be first come-first served. JUST JAZZ: Purists will love this program of Count Basie and Duke Ellington classics and standards performed by the Ferrum College Jazz Ensemble and contemporary big band arrangements and new compositions done by the Roanoke College Jazz Ensemble, plus several collaborative renditions.
