WHO, WHEN & WHERE

Play about AIDS

``Katie and Josh,'' a one-act play about a young mother and son who both have AIDS, will be performed at Hollins College this evening at 7 in the Hollins Theatre.

The play, written by local playwright Jo Weinstein, is based on a true story of a mother's struggle to gain acceptance for herself and her son while learning to live with AIDS.

Written two years ago, the play was first performed at Mill Mountain Theatre and is now an annual Hollins event.

``Katie and Josh'' is directed by Mary Best Boca and will include music of local duo Laura Pole and Greg Trafidlo.

If he feels well enough, the real-life Josh will attend the play (``Katie'' has passed away) and a tea party in his honor will follow the performance. A candlelight vigil will be held on the Front Quadrangle in honor of World AIDS Day.

For more information, call 362-6451.

Children's opera

Milton Granger, former Hollins College professor, Mill Mountain Theatre music director and artistic director of Southwest Virginia Opera, will be back in Southwest Virginia on Saturday to direct his children's opera, ``The Queen Bee.''

There will be two performances, 10 a.m. and 2 p.m., in Radford University's Porterfield Theatre.

The opera is based on a Hans Christian Andersen fairy tale. It tells the story of three brothers, two of whom are cruel to animals and the third, who is kind. Each gets what he deserves when they meet a woman with three eligible daughters.

Tickets are $2 for the general public, $1 for children and $1.75 for Radford faculty and staff. For more information, call the box office at (540) 831-5141 between noon and 6 p.m.
