GIMME SHELTER: CONCERT TO AID TURNING POINT

You may have seen the cassette for sale at Kroger or the Record Exchange or several other locations, some as far away as Staunton and Lynchburg.

It's a low-key looking tape, titled ``Harbor For Tomorrow,'' with a pleasant painting of a lighthouse on the cover. It advertises songs by various artists to benefit abused women and children.

Maybe you picked up the tape and wondered what's it's all about.

Well, now is your chance to find out. Many of these artists will perform together Sunday starting at 2 p.m. at the Third Street Coffeehouse in Roanoke.

The concert and the ``Harbor For Tomorrow'' cassette are the brainchild of Warren Kurtz, a member of the Southwest Virginia Songwriter's Association. Kurtz also is an employee of General Electric in Salem and a member of the Elfun Society, GE's community service organization. His association with both groups led to the ``Harbor For Tomorrow'' project.

Proceeds from sales of the $5 tape are benefitting the Turning Point Shelter For Abused Women and Children in Roanoke, a charity that the Elfun Society supports.

The idea for the cassette came to Kurtz after he and a fellow songwriter, Greg Trafidlo, wrote a song, titled ``Harbor For Tomorrow,'' about escaping an abusive relationship.

I'm at a turning point in my life

Away from fear and sorrow

Setting a smoother course to sail

Safe in a harbor for tomorrow

That song grew into a compilation of six songs written, performed and recorded by a variety of local musicians. All of the songs - ``Mary,'' ``Keeping This Life of Mine,'' ``Jessie (Going Through),'' ``Brother You Never Had'' and ``Strong Enough To Walk Away'' - deal with the issue of abuse.

At the Third Street Coffeehouse, most of the performers from the cassette will be on the bill, including Barb Martin, Heather Banker, Leslie Tucker, Holly Hunt and the trio, Pole, Trafidlo and Phillips.

Seating for the show will be limited. To make reservations, call Warren Kurtz at 387-7541. Cassettes will be on sale at the show.
