LIBERTY OPENS SEASON WITH A HARD-FOUGHT WIN

Raymond Arrington scored 10 points in the third quarter as the Minutemen opened their season with a Seminole District victory over the Bees in Bedford.

The Minutemen held a 10-point lead early in the second quarter, but lost it when J.J. Coles got into foul trouble. Brookville took a 29-28 halftime lead with a 19-10 run.

Arrington and Coles combined for 18 points in the third quarter as Liberty regained the lead for good.

Coles finished with 15 points and Arrington had 14.

Jimmy Colinger and Spencer Baird had 10 each for Brookville.

Shawsville 60, Rocky Gap 58: In Shawsville, the Shawnees battled back from an 11-point halftime deficit and clinched a non-district victory over the Eagles in the closing seconds in the opener for both teams.

Shawsville battled back in the third quarter behind Chris Graham's 15-point performance in the period. The Shawnees tied it in the final quarter when Mark Akers drained a jumper in the lane with 30 seconds to play. Barnett Carr rebounded Rocky Gap's next shot, passing to Akers, who was fouled in the lane with 12 ticks left on the clock.

Akers sank one of two free throws, putting Shawsville up by one. Rocky Gap turned over the inbounds pass and Carr was fouled on his shot. He also sank one of two, sealing the victory for the Shawnees.

Graham led Shawsville with a game-high 25 points on 12-of-13 field-goal shooting.

Will Dodson led the Eagles with 25 points.

Dan River 47, Magna Vista 43: The Piedmont District rivals battled back and forth for three quarters, but by the fourth quarter, only the Wildcats could keep it up as they prevailed in Ringgold.

The Warriors led by four when the fourth period began, but only scored four the rest of the way. Six missed free throws didn't help.

Steven Guy led Dan River with 15 points. Marcus Hairston had 15 for Magna Vista.

Altavista 54, Staunton River 52: In Moneta, the Colonels came back from a six-point halftime deficit to edge the Golden Eagles in a Seminole District game.

With Staunton River leading 52-50, Altavista tied the score forced a turnover. Jay Martin sank an eight-foot jumper from the lane to win the game before the Eagles' desperation half-court shot misfired.

Martin finished with 10 points for Altavista (1-0) and Chris Andrews added 11. Dennis Brown was the big man for Altavista with 20 points in the victory, including three 3-pointers.

Junior Hunter Hoggatt led the Golden Eagles (0-1) with a game-high 37 points. He was the only double-digit scorer for Staunton River.

Fieldale-Collinsville 60, Bassett 36: In Bassett, the Cavaliers out-hustled the Bengals late in the game, beating the Bengals' press, as they rolled to a Piedmont District victory.

Brad Harmon was the big man for Fieldale-Collinsville, scoring a game-high 21 points - eight in the second quarter as the Cavaliers took a five-point lead. Andre Law chipped in 14 and Neil Harbor added 10.

Corey Manns led Bassett with 13 points, nine of which came on three 3-pointers.

Covington 72, Rockbridge County 53: The Cougars capitalized on a hot shooting night to defeat the Wildcats in a non-district game in Covington.

The Cougars (1-0) had five scorers in double figures, led by Brian Holloway's 14 points and nine rebounds and Erwin Twitty's 11 points and eight assists.

Covington shot 56 percent from the floor in the first half and 52 percent for the game; Rockbridge County (0-1) shot 15 percent for the first half.

The Cougars extended their lead to 32 points early in the fourth on their way to the 72-53 victory. The Cougars outrebounded the Wildcats 42-20.

Cave Spring 70, Alleghany 57: The Knights got off to a strong start and built a 21-point lead in opening the season with a non-district victory over the visiting Mountaineers.

Jeff Lang led Cave Spring (1-0) with 21 points, including a pair of 3-pointers.

The Knights pounded Alleghany (0-1) on the boards, 35-20. Alex Phillips had 12 points and nine rebounds.

Alleghany came back in the second half to outscore Cave Spring 41-38, but matters had been settled by the fourth quarter.

Martinsville 88, Chatham 67 Five Bulldogs scored in double figures as Martinsville defeated the Cavaliers in a game of runs in Martinsville.

Manti Venable led the way with 19 points, and Wade Falls had 16, Leander Preston 13, Rasheed Penn 11 and Matt Grayson 10. It was the Piedmont District and season opener for both teams.

Martinsville (1-0) got up by 15 in the first quarter, but the Cavaliers cut it to five in the second quarter. By halftime, however, the Bulldogs were up 46-26.

Henri Fitzgerald led Chatham (0-1) with 16 points.

JV: Martinsville, 66-56.

Christiansburg 87, Auburn 52: In Riner, the Blue Demons stop Auburn's Kenny Wojciechowski, but they managed to tame the rest of the Eagles as they rolled to a non-district victory in the opener for both teams.

Wojciechowski scorched Christiansburg for a game-high 32 points, 12 in the second quarter. The rest of the Auburn squad could only muster another 20 points, however, led by Phillip Morris' seven as the Eagles fell.

The Demons featured four scorers in double figures, led by Darrell Calloway's 13 points. Rickie Williams chipped in 12, Brian Porter 11 and Michael Kazee added 10 in the victory.

Galax 78, Carroll County 47: Seniors Justin Lineberry and Rodney Sawyers came off the bench to spark a 22-point third quarter as the Maroon Tide took control of the Cavaliers in the opener for both in Galax.

Lineberry scored eight points and Sawyers had four points and four rebounds in the quarter, but Carroll County could muster just nine points.

Lineberry finished with 12 and Sawyers led all scorers with 16. Nate Noel added 11 and Ken Houtz 10. Jeff Ross grabbed nine rebounds and had five assists to go with his nine points.

Earl Johnson paced Carroll County with eight points.

GW-Danville 89, Franklin County 53: The GW-Danville Eagle mascot's head fell off at the end of the first period, but the rest of the hosts kept their heads and rolled past the visitors in Danville.

GW (1-0) had a distinct height advantage and led 50-16 at the half. Bobby Wimbush's 18 points led three GW double-figure scorers.

Franklin County (0-1) got 13 apiece from K.C. Hancock and Kermit Noel.

Tunstall 78, Laurel Park 63: In Dry Fork, Tunstall's young squad fell asleep early, but woke up in the second quarter as the Trojans battled past Laurel Park in the season-opening Piedmont District game for both teams.

Sophomores Derrick Rogers and Jermaine Motley led the Trojans' second-quarter surge. Rogers finished with with 26 points, 12 in the second period, and Motley, who had six in the second, finished with 10 points and 12 rebounds. Lashon Adkins, also a sophomore, scored 11 points and had five assists.

The Lancers (0-1) were led by Rashad Wall's 18 points, seven of which came in the third quarter, and 11 rebounds.

Gateway Christian 64, Pipestem (W.Va.) Christian 45: The Crusaders started slowly, but turned up the pressure to outscore the visitors 44-18 in the middle two quarters en route to a non-district victory.

Gateway Christian (2-1) was led by Monte Pence, who scored 23 points - nine in the third quarter. Scott Perfater added 10 points and 10 assists.

Mike Fox, playing with a sprained ankle, led Pipestem (1-2) with 14 points and 15 rebounds.

Girls

Franklin County 60, Heritage 53: Kelli Preston scored 17 of her 21 points in the second half as the Eagles pulled away from the Pioneers in a non-district game in Rocky Mount.

Franklin County (1-0) also got 12 points from Lashon Brooks and 11 from Penny Clayborne.

Lawanda Robey led Heritage (0-1) with 21 points, including four 3-pointers. Annika Jordan added 10.

Gar-Field 65, Pulaski County 56: In Charlottesville, the Cougars fell behind early then rallied to take the lead before falling in the first round of the Patriot Tip-Off Classic at Albemarle High School.

The Indians used their height advantage to take a 12-point first-quarter lead. Pulaski County (0-1) rallied behind Katrina Williams, who finished with a game-high 22 points to take the lead in the third quarter.

Gar-Field (1-0) pulled away by hitting eight of 12 free throws in the fourth quarter. The Cougars were 2-for-11 from the line in the period.

Emily Faught led the Indians with 13 points. Lisa Skeens had 10 points for Pulaski County, which plays Woodbridge at 6 p.m. today.
