PULASKI'S 1ST PRESBYTERIAN HIRES PASTOR FROM S.C. CHURCH

First Presbyterian Church in Pulaski will welcome its new pastor, David G. Coffey Jr., Sunday. Coffey comes to Pulaski from York, S.C., where he'd been pastor of First Presbyterian Church since 1991. He is from Pinehurst, N.C., and attended school in North Carolina and at Union Theological Seminary in Richmond.

Coffey was ordained in 1967 and has served in Presbyterian churches in Martinsburg, W.Va., Prince George, Va., Cherryville, N.C., and Rockledge, Fla.

The 114-year-old First Presbyterian Church in Pulaski is active in the community, having started Daily Bread, Inc. and SHARE and sponsoring Boy Scout Troop 249, Christmas baskets, bloodmobile, veteran's hospital visits, Habitat for Humanity, New River Community Action, Emergency Needs Task Force, and Christmas All Year. Services are at 11 a.m. with Sunday School at 9:45 a.m.

SERVICES

Christiansburg's Holy Spirit Catholic Church will celebrate Mass today at 5 p.m. at Our Saviour Lutheran Church on Cambria Street. Readings will be Isaiah 2:1-5; Psalms 122: 1-9; Romans 13: 11-14; Matthew 24: 37-44; Psalms 85: 8. 382-8028.

The Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of the New River Valley, on Gladewood Road in Blacksburg, will host Morton Nadler, who will speak on Jan Hus, a Protestant theologian who predated Martin Luther, at 10:30 a.m. Sunday. At 8:45 a.m., Ron Rordam of the Blacksburg Planning Commission, will speak about the zoning process during a round-table discussion. 552-2717.

Radford Wesleyan Church on Third Avenue will host Keith and Patty Norris, missionaries to Indonesia, at 11 a.m and 6:30 p.m. Sunday. Pastor Jim Cochran, 639-4273.

Blacksburg's Metaphysical Chapel on Church and Lee Streets will host Nancy Mason Mignone, who will speak on "Deep Ecology" at 7 p.m. Sunday. 951-0566.

Good Shepherd Church of the Brethren will host a Christmas Tree sale by Habitat for Humanity beginning Sunday and ending Dec. 20. Sale hours will be Monday through Friday, 4 to 8 p.m.; Saturdays, 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.; Sundays, noon to 6 p.m. 552-8422.

A service of lessons and carols for Advent will be held at Grace Covenant Presbyterian Church Dec. 10 from 7 to 8 p.m. The church is on Shadow Lake Road in Blacksburg. 552-3364.

Our Saviour Lutheran Church on Cambria Street in Christiansburg is conducting a new informal evening worship Wednesdays at 7 p.m. The 45-minute service is for people who work on weekends, community newcomers and people looking for a midweek worship opportunity. 382-2223.

Grove United Methodist Church on Tyler Avenue in Radford will have an "Afternoon of Advent/Christmas Music" Sunday at 3 p.m. Clarence Dishman, 639-2807.

The monthly gospel singing at the Oil, Chemical and Atomic Workers Union building in Fairlawn is Dec. 9 at 7 p.m. Performers will include the Gospel Strings, the Highland Gospel Singers, with special guests Bluegrass Inspirations and Third Generation. The New River Valley Community Chorus will present its Christmas Concerts Dec. 11 at 8 p.m. at First Presbyterian Church in Pulaski and Dec. 12 at 8 p.m. at Central United Methodist Church Radford. The performances will feature "Joy to the World," "Silver Bells," "Go Tell it on the Mountain," and others. The concerts are free, but donations are welcome.

The "Sonshiners" Ladies Ministry of Full Gospel Grace Tabernacle on Noblin Street in Radford will sponsor a Christmas Bazaar today from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. The sale will include baked items, candy and crafts. 674-5382.

Newport First Christian Center's annual Christmas Bazaar will be today from 9:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Crafts, decorations, food, lunch and more will be available. 544-7264.

Rockford United Methodist Church in Fairlawn will have a bake and Christmas crafts sale today from 2 to 5 p.m. The fund-raiser will feature homemade baked goods, Christmas crafts and fresh evergreen centerpieces.

Glade Baptist Church on Glade Road in Blacksburg will host "Advent: A Season of Anticipation," a gallery open house and artists' reception, Sunday from 3 to 6 p.m. Approximately 20 artists from throughout Southwest Virginia will share their interpretations of the holiday season, along with musical performers. The Blacksburg Jewish Community Center on the corner of Church and East Roanoke Streets will have a Hanukkah sale Sunday from noon to 2 p.m. Menorahs, candles, chocolate coins, dreidels, wrapping paper, books, games and candy will be on sale. Marcia Shumsky, 951-3145.

The Blacksburg Jewish Community Center will have a Hanukkah party Dec. 17 from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. at the Blacksburg Recreation Center. The event will feature singing and children's' activities. Participants are asked to bring a covered dish to share. Tickets are $4 for adult members and students, and $2 from children. Tickets are $5 for adult nonmembers, and $3 for children. Youths at Auburn United Methodist Church will perform house cleaning, mowing or weeding. Donations will be used to go to a youth conference. 382-4318.

Christian Community Outreach in Radford has a food outreach on the third Thursday of November and December at 7 p.m. at the Oil, Chemical and Atomic Workers Union Hall in Fairlawn. Food boxes will be available first come, first served to families and people who meet USDA income criteria. 639-5686.
