Camping volunteers

DUBLIN - Claytor Lake State Park will be one of 15 Virginia parks participating in the 1996 Campground Host Program. Camping is free in exchange for one to three months of service. From March 1 through Dec. 2, 1996, 15 state parks will offer 22 campground host positions.

Campground hosts spend 30 to 90 days camping at a state park in their own recreational vehicles or tents in exchange for performing such duties as greeting campers, distributing park and local information, reporting problems to staff and keeping the campground and bathhouses clean.

Through the Virginia State Parks "7 for 7" program, people who want to volunteer for one week may camp free for a week and receive other benefits. Volunteers with skills in carpentry, plumbing, painting, electrical work and landscaping are being recruited to help repair and maintain park facilities.

Volunteers are needed for other projects at all 28 state parks, six historic sites and 15 natural areas.
