The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed at 5,074.49 points, down 31.07 after posting a high of 5,118.93 and a low of 5074.49.
The New York Stock Exchange composite index closed at 323.59, down 0.40. The American Stock Exchange closed at 537.37, up 4.34, and the Nasdaq composite index at 1059.20, up 1.63.
On the New York Stock Exchange, 3,091 issues traded with 1,371 advances, 1,029 declines and 691 issues unchanged. The New York exchange's trading volume on Thursday was 527,910,780 shares.
Among the Standard & Poor's indexes, the composite closed at 605.37, down 2.27; the MidCap at 218.69, up 1.39; Industrials at 711.57, down 2.90; Utilities at 189.90, down 2.17; and Financial at 61.46, up 0.23.
