Hatfield plans to join U.S. Senate exodus

WASHINGTON - Sen. Mark Hatfield, R-Ore., who bucked his party's conservative orthodoxy on issues of war and peace but rose to one of the most powerful positions on Capitol Hill as chairman of the Senate Appropriations Committee, announced Friday that he will not seek a sixth term next year.

Hatfield, citing personal reasons and a desire to return to Oregon, is the 11th senator to announce plans to step down next year.

Republicans in Wyoming said Sen. Alan Simpson will announce that he will retire at the end of his term next year after 18 years in the Senate, according to the Associated Press.
