WILLIAM FLEMING PAYS BACK GLASS

It was a rematch William Fleming marked for revenge. Unfortunately for the Colonels, it didn't mean as much Friday night.

When Fleming took on E.C. Glass in a Northwest Region semifinal last season, the Hilltoppers won, advancing to the state tournament as William Fleming's season ended.

This time, it was only a non-district season opener for both teams, but that didn't stop the Colonels from gaining revenge in a big way as they flattened the visiting Hilltoppers 64-40.

William Fleming built a 14-point halftime advantage, in part behind James Stokes' eight-point first-quarter performance. E.C. Glass held strong in the third quarter behind Lamont Hughes' seven-point third-period spurt before Fleming iced the game in the fourth period with a 10-point run.

Stokes led the Colonels with a game-high 22 points and 16 rebounds. Brad Dunleavy chipped in 11 and Charles Burnette added 10. Sterling Tate contributed to the victory with six points and nine rebounds.

Hughes was the only bright spot for E.C. Glass, with a team-high 10 points.

Patrick Henry 81, Monacan 71: The Patriots outlasted the visitors from Richmond in a non-district opener.

Monacan led by three points after the first quarter. PH took advantage of sloppy ballhandling by the Chiefs to outscore them by 13 in the second period and take a 42-32 lead.

Monacan used an 11-0 run to begin the third quarter to take a 43-42 lead. The Patriots battled back with 27 points in the fourth to earn the victory.

Patrick Henry was led by sophomore Boo Battle, who scored a game-high 21 points. Phillip Taylor scored 12 and Rashad Myers added 11 for the Patriots.

The Chiefs were led by Mike Shinn's 19 points and Brad Harrington had 18. Monacan stays in the Roanoke Valley to take on William Fleming tonight.

Cave Spring 70, Alleghany 57: The Knights got off to a strong start and built a 21-point lead in opening the season with a non-district victory over the visiting Mountaineers.

Jeff Lang led Cave Spring (1-0) with 20 points, including a pair of 3-pointers.

The Knights pounded Alleghany (0-1) on the boards, 35-20. Alex Phillips had 12 points and nine rebounds.

Alleghany came back in the second half to outscore Cave Spring 41-36, but matters had been settled by the fourth quarter.

Timberlake Christian 75, Roanoke Valley Christian 72: Paul Fitzgerald had 20 points to lead the Tornadoes to a season-opening Virginia Independent Conference victory over the Eagles in Lynchburg.

Roanoke Valley Christian played most of the second half without its center, Joel Nester, who was hampered by foul trouble. He finished with 16 points and 10 rebounds.

Chris Huffman led the Eagles with 19 points and Eric Johnson had 15.

Liberty 60, Brookville 51: Raymond Arrington scored 10 points in the third quarter as the Minutemen opened their season with a Seminole District victory over the Bees in Bedford.

Liberty held a 10-point lead early in the second quarter, but lost it when J.J. Coles got into foul trouble. Brookville took a 29-28 halftime lead with a 19-10 run.

Arrington and Coles combined for 18 points in the third quarter as Liberty regained the lead for good.

Coles finished with 15 points and Arrington had 14.

Jimmy Colinger and Spencer Baird had 10 each for Brookville.

Altavista 54, Staunton River 52: In Moneta, the Colonels came back from a six-point halftime deficit to edge the Golden Eagles in a Seminole District game.

With Staunton River leading 52-50, Altavista tied the score and forced a turnover. Jay Martin sank an eight-foot jumper from the lane to win the game before the Eagles' desperation half-court shot misfired.

Martin finished with 10 points for Altavista (1-0). Dennis Brown was the big man for the Colonels with 20 points.

Junior Hunter Hoggatt led the Golden Eagles (0-1) with a game-high 37 points.

GW-Danville 89, Franklin County 53: The GW-Danville Eagle mascot's head fell off at the end of the first period, but the rest of the hosts kept their heads and rolled past the visitors in Danville.

GW (1-0) had a distinct height advantage and led 50-16 at the half. Bobby Wimbush's 18 points led three GW double-figure scorers.

Franklin County (0-1) got 13 apiece from K.C. Hancock and Kermit Noel.

Roanoke Valley Christian 29, North Cross 10: Gina Guthrie had 11 points and six steals and hit the game's only 3-pointer as the Eagles routed the Raiders in the first round of the Blue Ridge Conference Tip-Off Tournament at North Cross.
