RETIRING state Republican Chairman Pat McSweeney blames Gov. George Allen's "scorched-earth approach to state government" for alienating segments of the GOP coalition. McSweeney also opposes the prospective bid by Allen ally Michael Thomas to be elected McSweeney's successor in the GOP post.
How much does he oppose it? McSweeney reported to the Richmond Times-Dispatch that he had told Thomas, "I would first cut his heart out with a rusty can top" before allowing Allen to take over the party.
