PRIMERICA PROMOTES ROANOKER

BERNARD HARRIS of Roanoke has been promoted to regional vice president of Atlanta-based Primerica Financial Services, a subsidiary of the Travelers Group, which markets and administers financial services products including life insurance, mutual funds and debt consolidation loans.

Harris began his career with Primerica in 1985 as a sales representative in Henry County, left the industry for several years to work in cable television, and returned to the company in 1994. He was named regional manager in June 1994.

In his new position, Harris will work from offices in Roanoke and Rocky Mount.

GOVERNMENT

WILLIAM WHITE SR., a member of the Roanoke City Council who was appointed by the council to fill the unexpired term of JAMES G. HARVEY II on the Hotel Roanoke Conference Center Commission, has been elected the commission's chairman. White is a partner in the firm of Saunders & White Certified Public Accountants.

HEALTH CARE

LIZ LIGHTERNESS-KASZA has joined the staff of Rehabilitation Services of Roanoke as director of occupational therapy. Other occupational therapists who recently joined the group are JOAN CHANNER, AMY HARKNESS, KAREN HAYNIE, ANNA KING, MARIA MANGIARACINA and KRISTI WAGGONER. Rehabilitation Services provides physical, speech and occupational therapy.

Licensed professional counselor DAVID L. MORTELLARO has formed a new group practice in Roanoke, Associates in Brief Therapy, where he will provide Christian counseling to individuals, couples and families, as well as divorce and family mediation services. Joining him is PEG SORRENTINO, a licensed clinical social worker. Her areas of expertise include individual, family and group therapy, play therapy assessment and treatment for children.

MANUFACTURING

BRUCE CODY, president of Architectural Wood, a woodwork manufacturer in Roanoke, has been elected to the national board of directors and the executive committee of the Architectural Woodwork Institute in Centreville. Additionally, Cody is on the national Quality Standards Board of Review committee.

MEDICINE

DR. REBECCA W. TANNER has been appointed to the medical staff of Lewis-Gale Medical Center in Salem. A physiatrist specializing in the practice of physical medicine and rehabilitation, Tanner will be the medical director of the comprehensive outpatient rehabilitation facility at Lewis-Gale. She also will admit patients to Lewis-Gale Rehabilitation Center.

DR. HUGH CRAFT of the Community Hospital of Roanoke Valley has been elected president of the Virginia Chapter of the American Academy of Pediatrics and the Virginia Pediatric Society.

MORTGAGE BANKING

SABRINA LEONARD-GARVIN and DEBBIE WILSON have joined Signet Mortgage Corp. as loan originators. Leonard-Garvin has been in the mortgage business for more than six years, most recently as a loan originator with Virginia First Mortgage Co. Wilson, who has 11 years of mortgage experience, comes to Signet from First National Mortgage Co., where she was also a loan originator. She will be vice president of the Roanoke chapter of Mortgage Bankers Association for 1996.

NONPROFITS

WILLIAM K. SMITH-WICK, assistant executive director for programs and administration of Virginia Baptist Children's Home and Family Services in Salem, has been elected to a two-year term as president of the Virginia Association of Children's Homes, a 33-member coalition representing private child-care facilities. Smithwick has been with the children's home in Salem for nine years.

REAL ESTATE

Roanoke Land, Commercial, Industrial and Investment Real Estate Multiple Listing Service Inc. has elected officers and directors for 1996: BILL MODICA, Progress Rush Co., president; GARRETT McGUIRE, Lugar, Poff, McGuire, vice president; MIKE SMITH, Progress Rush Co., treasurer; and DEWEY ROBERTSON, Dewey Robertson & Associates, secretary.

TRANSPORTATION

LORINDA G. LIONBERGER of Penhook has been appointed to the newly created Public-Private Transportation Advisory Panel by Virginia Secretary of Transportation Robert Martinez. A member of the Commonwealth Transportation Board, Lionberger represents the 12-county Salem transportation district. She is accounting and human resources coordinator for Lionberger Construction Co. of Roanoke.

JACQUELINE L. SHUCK, executive director of the Roanoke Regional Airport Commission, has been appointed to the board of directors for the Airports Council International-North America for 1996. The council represents local, regional and state governing bodies that own and operate commercial airports in the United States, Canada and Bermuda.

UNIONS

ALMA LEE of Salem has been re-elected for a second three-year term as president of the National Veterans Affairs Council of the American Federation of Government Employees.
