Trash tags

WYTHEVILLE - Wytheville residents will be able to buy tags for trash pickup service starting in the last week of December.

The tags, to be placed on bags left weekly for curbside pickup, will be on sale at the Wytheville Municipal Building and also at the Acme supermarket in the Wythe Shopping Plaza on East Main Street, Dillon's IGA grocery on 4th Street, Kincer-Miller Hardware Co. on Main Street in downtown Wytheville and Duck's Grocery on U.S. 11 west.

Annual decals will be available sooner. Residents can buy an annual decal to be placed on a reusable trash container, or individual tags to be attached to trash bags.

New Century growing?

WYTHEVILLE - Wythe and Bland counties may be added to that part of Virginia in which the New Century Council is recommending ideas for economic development.

Beverly Fitzpatrick Jr., the council's executive director, and his assistant, Ed Whittemore, called the additional counties a natural fit for inclusion in the region at a meeting last month with representatives of the Wytheville-Wythe-Bland Chamber of Commerce.

The chamber board will study various council recommendations for developing the nine-county and five-city region and see if its counties might want to participate. New counties would have to go along with the seven basic council recommendations, Fitzpatrick said, but there is flexibility on strategies to achieve them.

The New Century Council region now stretches from Botetourt County to the east to Pulaski County to the west, including the Roanoke and New River Valleys.

Dropout prevention

DUBLIN - A dropout prevention task force in Pulaski County will present a program at Dublin Middle School at 9 a.m. Wednesday.

The organization scheduled dropout prevention week last month with activities at various schools including poster contests at elementary schools and slogan ideas at middle schools. The slogans will be used on grocery bags in county stores. Slogans are also being sought from Pulaski County High School students, with the winning slogan slated for a billboard in the county.

Prizes will be given in the poster and slogan competitions.

Advanced theater arts students at the high school have written a skit for presentation to middle school students on the subject of dropout prevention.
