ROWAN HEADS BACK TO SALEM

Aaron Bosco scored two touchdowns and Greg Lister threw for one, leading Rowan College to a 28-15 victory over Washington & Jefferson in an NCAA Division III semifinal Saturday in Washington, Pa.

The victory gave Rowan (10-2-1) a berth in the Amos Alonzo Stagg Bowl, which will be played Dec.9 at Salem Stadium. The Profs, who lost to Mount Union in 1993 in the first Stagg Bowl played in Salem, will face Wisconsin-Lacrosse, a 20-17 winner over Mount Union in Saturday's other semifinal.

It was the third time in four years Rowan played Washington & Jefferson in the semifinal round. W&J won 18-13 in 1992, and Rowan posted a 23-16 victory in 1993.

The Presidents (10-1) took a 6-0 lead with two first-quarter field goals by Mike Evan on Saturday.

Rowan went in front to stay in the second quarter on a 2-yard run by Eugene Foster and a 53-yard pass from Lister to Priest Ramsey.

Evan added a 42-yard field goal with 2:26 left in the first half to cut the Profs' lead to 14-9 at halftime.

Rowan clinched the victory with two 1-yard touchdown runs by Bosco, the first with 8:33 left in the third quarter and the second with 6:18 left in the game.

W&J scored with 3:53 left in the game on a 16-yard pass from Jason Baer to Chris Begley. Baer completed 13 of 29 passes for 144 yards, but was intercepted four times.

Lister completed 15 of 25 passes for 186 yards.

In the other NCAA Division III semifinal Saturday:

Wisconsin-La Crosse 20, Mount Union 17: Craig Kusick passed for three touchdowns, including two to Jeremy Earp, as the Eagles (13-0) edged the Purple Raiders (12-1) in Alliance, Ohio.

Mount Union lost its final chance for a victory with 1:30 remaining when Mike Maslowski intercepted a pass by Bill Borchert at the Wisconsin-LaCrosse 5-yard line.

All the scoring occurred in the first half. Mount Union scored first on Bill Andrea's 28-yard field goal early in the first quarter. Later in the quarter, Kusick hit Earp with a 24-yard touchdown pass as the Eagles went ahead 7-3.

The Purple Raiders' Mark Black intercepted a pass by Kusick and returned it 45 yards for a score with a little more than a minute left in the quarter to put Mount Union back in front 10-7.

The Eagles recaptured the lead 15 seconds into the second quarter on Kusick's second touchdown pass, a 49-yarder to John Barrett. Mount Union took a 17-14 lead on Borchert's 9-yard scoring pass to Steve Evans.

What proved to be the winning score came on Kusick's second touchdown pass to Earp, a 41-yarder with 5:22 left in the first half.

Kusick completed 15 of 27 passes for 277 yards with two interceptions. Borchert was 25-of-50 for 252 yards, with one touchdown and two interceptions.
