HOKIES WON'T BE PLAYING AUBURN NEXT 2 SEASONS

While Virginia Tech awaits word on its Bowl Alliance destination and opposition, the Hokies learned one thing Saturday concerning their future football opponents - they won't be playing Auburn. Not anytime soon, anyway.

A Big East Conference source confirmed that negotiations between Tech and Auburn on a prospective two-game, home-and-home series in 1996 and '97 have broken down.

Under the prospective deal, Tech would have played at Auburn next season, with a '97 rematch in Blacksburg.

Dave Braine, Tech athletic director, said the school plans to release its 1996 schedule next week.

In addition to its seven games in the Big East Conference, Tech is scheduled to play Akron, East Carolina and Virginia next season. Miami of Ohio, Alabama-Birmingham and Virginia are Tech's set non-conference foes for '97.

Tech needs to find one more non-conference opponent for both seasons.
