HIGH SCHOOLS ANNOUNCE NOVEMBER TOP SENIORS

Following are students who have been named Seniors of the Month for November in Montgomery County's high schools:

Auburn student Lisa Jessie is a member of the Beta, Library, Spanish and College clubs and Students Against Drunk Driving. She also has been president of Future Business Leaders of America, vice president of the Monogram Club, captain of Math MACC and vice president of National Honor Society.

She was a two-year member of the varsity cheerleading team and has participated in the choir, swing choir, national anthem choir and handbell choir. She has received the National Foreign Language Award and the National Academic Achievement Award.

She is the daughter of Roger and Ruby Jessie of Pilot.

Holly Moyer of Blacksburg High has been involved with literary activities for several years. She started the Writers' Group at the school and has attended several writing workshops. She is editor of the literary magazine and has been a member of the Theater Arts Association, Music Club, Madrigals and the Symphonic Band. She sings in her church's adult choir.

She was named Outstanding Science Student in Earth/Research Science and selected for All District Mixed Chorus and All County Chorus this year. She attended the 1995 Governor's School for the Humanities and was nominated for the National Council of Teachers of English Writing Contest. She also received the Christiansburg/Blacksburg Rotary Club Academic Achievement Award and is a National Merit semi-finalist.

She is the daughter of Albert and Lynette Moyer of Blacksburg.

Christa Hilt has been involved with school government since her first year at Christiansburg High. She was a student council representative for four years and class treasurer in her sophomore and junior years. She has been on several school-based committees, including Students Concerned about Traffic Safety, school renewal committee and graduation committee.

She is vice president of Future Business Leaders of America and has won awards at regional tournaments.

She played volleyball for three years and was on the school's Junior Olympic volleyball team for two years.

She received the Virginia High School League Academic Award, Rotary Club Junior Achievement Award and Perfect Attendance Award (three years). She attended Girls' State as a junior and was a representative in the Mr. and Miss Christiansburg High contest this past year.

Hilt's mother is Lou Bower of Christiansburg.

Homecoming King John Akers of Shawsville High has been involved with school government for four years and was class vice president for two years. He's a member of the Beta Club, College Club and Students Against Drunk Driving.

He played baseball and football for four years, basketball for three years and wrestling for one year. He has played American Legion Baseball for four years and made first team All District in football and baseball as a junior.

An honor roll student, Akers received an academic letter and two academic bars. He is the son of Mike and Martha Akers of Christiansburg.

Several high school students have participated at the Science Olympics at Roanoke College. Blacksburg High School won the large-school division and Radford High won the small-school division.

Blacksburg team members were Stefan Williams, Catherine Koebel, Stephanie Kraige and David Williams. The team was coached by Pat Burleson and Gayle Maxey.

The Radford team included Scott Turner, Mary Katherine Arthur, Eric Merkt and Jennifer Wilkinson. It was coached by Mary Norris and Gail Cook.

Several Pulaski County High School students have been selected to sing at the Senior High Festival in February. They are seniors Mike Edwards, Jon Gerhz, Crystal Raymond and Amy Dunford; junior Beth Hamblin; and sophomores Ben O'Dell, Jenny Rowh, Andrea Armes and Taylor Baldwin.

Three Pulaski County freshmen won places in the Junior All District Choir. They are Eric Southern, Carrie Hall and Teresa Boyd.

Crystal Raymond was named to the Virginia Honors Choir. She participated in the 50th anniversary concert at the Virginia Music Educators Association convention at The Homestead.

HOLIDAY EVENTS

Radford High School choir and symphonic bands offer their holiday concert Dec. 12 at 7 p.m. at Radford University's Preston Auditorium. Radford High chorus and concert choir alumni are invited to join the singing of the Hallelujah Chorus from Handel's Messiah. Admission is $1; children under 12 are admitted free.

The Dalton Intermediate School choral and advanced intermediate band will present a holiday concert Dec. 14 at 7 p.m. in the Radford High auditorium. Admission is $1; children under 12 are admitted free.

The Safety Patrol at Gilbert Linkous Elementary School holds "Breakfast with Santa" Saturday, 8-10:30 a.m. in the school's multipurpose room. There will be music, a bake sale and photo opportunities with Santa. Cost is $3 for adults and $2 for children.
