WILDFLOUR TO RISE AS NEW BAKERY

Come mid-January, some residents of Roanoke's Old Southwest will awaken to the smell of fresh bread baking.

Doug and Evie Robison, owners of the Wildflour Cafe at Towers Shopping Center, said Monday that they are opening Wildflour Market and Bakery at 1212 Fourth St., between Albemarle and Walnut avenues. The opening is scheduled for Jan. 15.

Doug Robison said the move was prompted by a need for more space to bake the breads and desserts sold in the cafe. Since the Robisons opened Wildflour in 1991, all baking has been done in the cafe.

``We're in a shoe box over here,'' he said. Baking will be shifted to the new location and delivered daily to the Towers cafe.

The new location also will serve sandwiches, salads, breads and desserts and will have several tables for dining in. Hot and cold foods and some packaged foods will be available for takeout.

The bakery initially will be open 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. Robison said they plan to run the bakery with a staff of about 16.

The building, which the Robisons bought in May for $110,000, opened in 1946 as a Mick-or-Mack grocery store. It later became a BestWay grocery store. Since the early 1980s, it has housed a number of independent grocery businesses.

``It's an odd business location,'' Robison said. ``But we really hope to make it sort of a neighborhood spot.''
