Two weeks ago, Virginia wasn't recruiting David Rivers. Now, he's the first quarterback to commit to the Cavaliers this year.
Rivers, a 6-foot-3, 200-pounder, passed for 1,341 yards and nine touchdowns this past season in his first year as a starter for Lakeside High School in Augusta, Ga.
Rivers, who set a single-game school record by passing for 315 yards, attended quarterback camp at Georgia Tech and was considering the Yellow Jackets, North Carolina State, Duke and Vanderbilt.
Rivers came to the Cavaliers' attention after he sent a highlight tape to the UVa office. Virginia called Wednesday to invite him for a visit and he committed Sunday night.
``Their coaches said it was one of the few times they had seen a film and really been impressed,'' Rivers told the Augusta Chronicle.
Sources say Virginia wants to sign two quarterbacks and is among the leaders for 6-2, 195-pound Tim Hasselbeck, a preseason All-American from Westwood, Mass. Hasselbeck's brother, Tim, saw action this year for Boston College.
Rivers is one of eight players known to have committed to UVa.
