TOPSY-TURVY DAY|

LENGTH: Short : 30 lines
ILLUSTRATION: PHOTO: ALAN KIM/Staff. After overturning his rig while trying

to avoid rear-ending a motorist, truck driver Mark King, who was

driving a tractor-trailer for Kmart out of Greensboro, N.C.,

contemplates the accident scene. Witnesses said the traffic lights

were not working when the collision occurred at U.S. 460 and

Virginia 314 (Southgate Drive) in Blacksburg Thursday just before

noon when King came upon a motorist who had stopped at the

intersection in the eastbound lane on 460. King also was eastbound,

heading for the Christiansburg Kmart. The driver of the car had

stopped because she saw cars coming off Virginia 314 into the

intersection. King, who was hauling 4,000 to 6,000 pounds of

inventory, could not stop his truck in time. To avoid hitting the

car and other traffic, King drove his rig up the bank and rolled it

over. "He did a good job with it," Blacksburg Police Lt. Bruce

Bradbery said. King crawled out of the truck and walked away; there

was about $35,000 damage to the truck. The road was partially

blocked until 2 p.m., and then shut down until 4 p.m. so the truck

could be righted and removed. color.
