5 INDICTED AFTER BREAK-INS AT ANIMAL HOSPITAL

A Bedford County grand jury indicted five people Friday on charges of breaking into a veterinary hospital to steal animal tranquilizers.

Neighbors near the Bedford County Animal Hospital on Virginia 122 reported a break-in Sept. 11.

Bedford police stopped a car leaving the hospital and arrested Amy Leia Cleary, 19; Eric Ross Garland, 18; and James Leslie Giddens, 19, all of Roanoke.

According to Commonwealth's Attorney Randy Krantz, police found animal tranquilizers and other drugs from the animal hospital inside the car.

From confessions made after that arrest, Krantz said, investigators charged Giddens and Chad Rudolph Honaker, 22, of Montvale and Shera Young Surface, 18, of Roanoke with an Aug. 29 burglary at the animal hospital.

Giddens is charged with two counts of breaking and entering. Garland, Honaker and Cleary are charged with breaking and entering. Surface is charged with breaking and entering and grand larceny.

Each breaking and entering or grand larceny charge carries a sentence of one to 20 years in prison.

Trial is set for Jan. 19.
