COACH'S SON DIES IN SLEEP

The son of former Dallas Cowboys defensive back Charlie Waters has died less than two weeks before his 18th birthday.

Cody Waters, a senior at Marist High School in Eugene, Ore., where he played soccer and football, died in his sleep Sunday night. The cause of death was not immediately known, but he was not believed to have been ill.

Waters, a three-time Pro Bowl selection who played for the Cowboys from 1970 to 1981, had moved to Eugene this year when he was hired as defensive coordinator at the University of Oregon. Before coming to Eugene, the family lived in Denver, where Waters was an assistant coach of the Denver Broncos for seven seasons.

Ohio State's Eddie George was chosen as winner of the Doak Walker Award as the nation's top college running back. George finished the season ranked fifth in the nation in rushing, with 1,826 yards and fourth in all-purpose yards, with 2,225.

Other finalists were Karim Abdul-Jabbar of UCLA, Tiki Barber of Virginia, Tim Biakabatuka of Michigan, Warrick Dunn of Florida State, George Jones of San Diego State, Wasean Tait of Toledo and Moe Williams of Kentucky.

Mississippi State football coach Jackie Sherrill has, in essence, fired his top two assistant coaches - offensive coordinator Bruce Arians and defensive coordinator Bill Clay.

Arians, a former Virginia Tech player and assistant coach, joined Sherrill's staff in 1993. He had spent the previous four seasons as running backs coach with the NFL's Kansas City Chiefs following six seasons as Temple's head coach.
