SOME CHANGES SUBJECT TO REVIEW

Being in a historic district may boost property values. But it also requires homeowners to seek approval from the city for many exterior changes.

Changes that must be reviewed and approved by the city Architectural Review Board are:

New buildings and structures, including signs, decks, fences and parking lots.

Additions to buildings.

Reconstruction of buildings when a different design is proposed.

Installation of siding, roofing materials and windows when a different design is proposed.

Demolition of a building.

Work that doesn't require review and approval includes:

Ordinary maintenance and repair.

Replacement of a home's features, such as siding, windows, etc., when it is the same as the item being replaced.
