Floyd craft show

FLOYD - There will be a holiday craft show, featuring Floyd crafts, hot cider, roasted chestnuts, Christmas trees, wreaths, food and music, at the Old Jacksonville Barn Saturday, Dec. 9, from 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. and Sunday, Dec. 10, from noon to 5:30 p.m.

WinterFest 95 also will give the public an opportunity to view the Old Jacksonville Barn and property.

Locally made gifts, locally grown trees and decorative greenery will be available. Musicians and carolers will entertain and Floyd civic groups and food businesses will provide meals and snacks.

A Floyd non-profit organization purchased the barn property this summer. Now known as the Jacksonville Center, the organization's mission is to restore the building and stimulate economic development through arts and tourism.

The Jacksonville Center is on Virginia 8 south of Floyd toward the Blue Ridge Parkway. For more information, call 745-2784.

Experimental theater

RADFORD - Radford University's new experimental theater group makes its debut performance Thursday, Dec. 7, at 8 p.m.

The Porterfield Ensemble will present Ping Chong's "King Ness" in the Porterfield Black Box Theatre. Admission is free.

"King Ness" includes acting, stylized movement, dance, multi-media projections and music. The Porterfield Ensemble is comprised of 13 Radford acting students. This performance is a work in progress to be presented in its final form in the spring.

Holiday craft show

CHRISTIANSBURG - Christiansburg Lion Club's annual holiday craft show will be Saturday, Dec. 9, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Christiansburg Armory. The show is free.

More than 45 regional artisans will be at the show. Door prizes will be awarded three times per hour, featuring samples of the crafts.

The Lions will have a concession stand for breakfast, lunch and snacks and will be selling brooms. The club will also be accepting used eyeglasses, which will go to the Roanoke Eyeglass Recycling Center. In addition, the club will be selling raffle tickets for a chance at $10,000 or a Ford Escort or Ranger automobile. All proceeds go to the Christiansburg Lions Club's primary missions of sight and hearing conservation.

Grant completed

BLACKSBURG - DuPont recently completed the final installment of a five-year, $1 million grant to Virginia Tech. Proceeds support teaching and research programs in engineering, science, business and agriculture - including anaerobic biology and chemical engineering, computer science and accounting information systems. Money will also be used to encourage and foster minority interest in the sciences and business.

The first of the five annual payments was made in spring 1991. DuPont is a long-time supporter of Virginia Tech. The company ranks 14th on Fortune magazine's list of the 500 largest U.S. corporations with sales of more than $39 billion.

`Rooms at the Inn'

CHRISTIANSBURG - Super 8 Motel's "Rooms at the Inn" program provides free accommodations on Christmas Eve to out-of-town friends or relatives of patients in nearby nursing homes, veteran's homes, hospitals or treatment centers.

NRCC gets equipment

DUBLIN - New River Community College received a donation from Fluke Corp. of Everett, Wash., of equipment for the college's electronics programs. The donation, two scopemeters and related equipment, is valued at more than $4,500.

The award made for a proposal submitted by Dan Lookadoo, associate professor of electronics.
