NORTHSIDE OPENS WITH A WIN

Northside's duo of Ben Peete and Justin Porterfield made key free throws in the fourth quarter Tuesday night as the 1995 Group AA runners-up held on for a 53-49 victory over Blacksburg on Tuesday night in a non-district boys' game in Blacksburg.

The Vikings made eight of 16 free throws in the fourth quarter compared with Blacksburg's 1-of-6 shooting. Peete, who scored a game-high 19 points, hit three of four. Porterfield, who finished with 12, went 2-for-3 for the Vikings (1-0).

Blacksburg (0-1) managed to tie the score at 40 through three quarters. Jon Hutchins scored eight of his team-high 16 points in the third quarter for the Indians.

William Fleming 63, Halifax County 53: James Stokes was too much for the Comets, scoring 24 points, as the Colonels improved their record to 2-0 with a victory in South Boston.

Charles Burnette and Sterling Tate added 10 each for Fleming.

Glenvar 67, Lord Botetourt 52: The Highlanders, the 1995 Group A runners-up, built a 10-point lead in the first quarter and never looked back as they opened their season with a victory over the visiting Cavaliers (0-1).

Josh Williamson and Eric East scored 18 points each and Corey Willis had 16 for Glenvar. James Williams also contributed in a number of ways, with nine rebounds, seven points, six steals and four assists.

The Highlanders hit 53 percent of their field-goal attempts and went 13-for-17 from the free-throw line.

Michael Gates scored a game-high 19 points for Botetourt and Wesley Cox added 10 points and seven rebounds.

GW-Danville 115, Patrick Henry 73: The Eagles rained down 10 3-pointers as they rolled past the Patriots in a non-district game at PH's gym.

Bobby Wimbush took care of the inside work for GW (2-0), scoring a game-high 28 points - 18 in the first half. Nathan Poole added 24 points, including four 3-pointers.

Marcus Cunningham had 13 points and Quentin Jones chipped in 10 for the Eagles.

Patrick Henry (1-1), which trailed by four after the first quarter, was led by Ronnie Kasey, who scored 16 points. Brooks Berry and Malik Shareef added 12 each.

Roanoke Valley Christian 68, Shawsville 51: Eric Johnson had 16 points to lead three scorers in double figures as the Eagles (1-1) capitalized on turnovers to down the Shawnees (1-1) in Shawsville.

Simon Foster had seven of his 15 points in the third quarter when Roanoke Valley Christian outscored the Shawnees 22-15. Shawsville cut it to seven with three minutes remaining, but the Eagles scored a couple of quick points off turnovers to secure the victory.

Simon Jones led Shawsville, which committed 35 turnovers, with 17 points and nine rebounds. Barnett Carr scored 13.

Joel Nester added 12 for the Eagles.

Holy Cross 45, North Cross 43: The Raiders (0-1, 0-1) made a run at the Gaels (1-1, 1-1) in the fourth quarter, taking a one-point lead with about two minutes left, but Holy Cross held on for a Virginia Independent Conference victory in Lynchburg.

Jim Porterfield scored 14 points to lead the way for the Gaels, who hit their free throws down the stretch. Steve Wheeler added 12.

Brian Whitaker led North Cross with 12 points - all on 3-pointers - and Jeff Baetz added 10 points and a team-high nine rebounds.

Girls

William Fleming 74, Halifax County 35: It was double trouble for the visiting Comets as Shaunarey and Renita Walker led the Colonels to a 39-point blowout victory in non-district action.

Shaunarey Walker paced Fleming (2-0) with 19 points and five assists and Renita Walker chipped in 14 points, 10 of which came in the second quarter. Revonda Barber contributed in 11 points and nine assists, and Carol Ellis added 10 points.

Teasha Taniel led Halifax (1-1) with 10 points.

Roanoke Catholic 39, Carlisle 21: Teresa Monsour scored 12 of her 14 points in the first half to lead the Celtics (2-1) past the visiting Chiefs (0-3).

Monsour scored eight points in the first half off steals, and had nine in the game. Christy Hinman added 15 points and Whitney Campbell grabbed a team-high eight rebounds.

Roanoke Catholic scored most of its points off the fast break, and used a trapping defense to create 19 turnovers and 20 steals.

Nicole Collins paced Carlisle (0-3) with 10 points.

GW-Danville 71, Patrick Henry 41: Shree Dodson led a balanced Eagles attack with 11 points as the visiting Patriots absorbed their 55th consecutive loss.
