Citadel ready for women's applications

CHARLESTON, S.C. - The Citadel is ready to start processing applications from women who want to join its all-male corps of cadets, according to a plan filed in federal court Tuesday.

The college would inform women who meet all other standards that they are eligible to enroll if the courts order women into the corps. Accepted applications would be kept on file until the legal question is resolved.

There are four applications from women on file at The Citadel, college spokeswoman Judith Fluck said. One is from Nancy Mellette, who has taken Shannon Faulkner's place in the lawsuit challenging the constitutionality of the all-male corps.

Minister defends Hooters, quits post

CHARLOTTE, N.C. - A Baptist minister has resigned after stopping off at a Hooters restaurant for lunch and telling a newspaper reporter who showed up to interview customers that male waiters would ``undermine'' the chain.

The Rev. James Posey of Woodlawn Baptist Church in Charlotte said his resignation wasn't directly related to his visit to the restaurant, which features scantily clad waitresses and is under a federal directive to hire male waiters.

Posey said he was on the way to visit a shut-in Nov. 15 when he stopped at Hooters. A reporter from The Charlotte Observer was there interviewing patrons.
