NORTHSIDE OPENS WITH WIN AT BLACKSBURG

Northside's duo of Ben Peete and Justin Porterfield made key free throws in the fourth quarter Tuesday night as the 1995 Group AA runners-up held on for a 53-49 victory over Blacksburg on Tuesday night in a non-district boys' game in Blacksburg.

The Vikings made eight of 16 free throws in the fourth quarter compared with Blacksburg's 1-of-6 shooting. Peete, who scored a game-high 19 points, hit three of four. Porterfield, who finished with 12, went 2-for-3 for the Vikings (1-0).

Blacksburg (0-1) managed to tie the score at 40 through three quarters. Jon Hutchins scored eight of his team-high 16 points in the third quarter for the Indians.

Staunton River 75, Rustburg 51: In Rustburg, the Golden Eagles took control with a 22-point first quarter and closed the game with 23 in the fourth as they soared past the Devils in the Seminole District.

Jeff English led Staunton River (1-1, 1-1) with 12 points in the opening period. Hunter Hoggatt sewed up the victory for the Eagles in the fourth by going 8-of-10 from the free-throw line and scoring 12 total points in the quarter. Hoggatt finished with a game-high 23 points and English tallied 21.

Andy Maddox led the Devils (0-1, 0-1) with 19 points, including three 3-pointers.

Floyd County 83, Galax 73: In Floyd, the Buffaloes broke loose for 38 points in the third quarter to wipe out a 12-point halftime deficit and their opener.

Floyd County (1-0), sparked by 13 points from Derek Saunders and 10 from Travis Cantrell, outscored the Maroon Tide 38-13 in the third quarter to take a 64-52 lead.

Saunders finished with 23 points, and Cantrell had 22 to go with eight assists and six steals.

Nate Noel paced Galax (1-1) with 22 points.

Bassett 65, Martinsville 52: The Bengals built a 14-point halftime lead and beat the Bulldogs in a Piedmont District game in Martinsville.

Devon Claybrooks had 16 of his game-high 25 points in the first half as Bassett (1-1) forged a 34-20 lead.

Martinsville (1-1) got as close as two points in the fourth quarter, but the Bengals made their free throws down the stretch to stay ahead.

Leander Preston led the Bulldogs with 19 points.

Fieldale-Collinsville 71, Gretna 55: The Cavaliers made 18 of 22 free throws in the fourth quarter to pull away from Hawks in a Piedmont District game in Collinsville.

Brad Harmon led the Cavaliers (2-0 overall, 2-0 district) with 18 points.

Jason Tucker scored 22 points - including three 3-pointers - to lead Gretna (0-2, 0-2).

Parry McCluer 61, Wilson Memorial 56: Chip Coleman scored four of his 13 points in overtime to lead the Fighting Blues past the Green Hornets in a non-district game in Buena Vista.

Nathan Floyd, who hit a free throw with 17 seconds to tie the score at 52, led Parry McCluer (1-0) with 17 points.

Wilson Memorial (0-1) was led by Barry Shiflett, who scored 13 points, and Matt Bartolocki, who had 10.

Tazewell 68, Christiansburg 63: The Bulldogs frittered away a 13-point first-half lead and shot a chilly 7-for-18 from the free-throw line down the stretch, yet still managed to beat the Blue Demons in Tazewell

Thad Beavers had 21 points and Jason Snapp 20 for the Bulldogs (1-1). Darrell Calloway's 14 led a quartet of double-figure scorers for Christiansburg (1-1).

Buffalo Gap 67, Covington 59: Ryan Costa scored 25 points to lead the Bison past the Cougars in a game that featured nine lead changes.

Host Covington led 53-52 with six minutes remaining, but couldn't hold on. The Cougars (1-1) committed 22 turnovers to Buffalo Gap's 17.

Randy Mohler added 11 points for the Bison (1-1) and Ryan Durham had nine rebounds.

Dusty Roman paced Covington with 22 points. Brian Holloway added 14 and Mike Barber had 10 to go with his 11 rebounds.

Fort Chiswell 86, Giles 70: The Pioneers capitalized on more consistent shooting from the field and from the free-throw line to defeat the Spartans in a non-district game in Pearisburg.

T.J. King led Fort Chiswell (1-1) with 27 points, 12 from beyond the arc. The Pioneers outscored Giles (0-1) by 19 points combined in the first and fourth quarters.

Giles was led by sophomore Jason Edwards' 16 points.

Covington Boys' Home 66, Gateway Christian 55: In Covington, Sean Riddick had 13 points and 14 rebounds as the Indians downed the Crusaders in a non-district game to remain unbeaten.

Boys' Home (5-0) led virtually all the way, but never could put away stubborn Gateway Christian. Freddy Portillo had 14 points for the Indians and Chris Duncan scored 11 points.

Brad Duncan paced the Crusaders (2-2) with 15 points.

Roanoke Valley Christian 68, Shawsville 51: Eric Johnson had 16 points to lead three scorers in double figures as the Eagles (1-1) capitalized on turnovers to down the Shawnees (1-1) in Shawsville.

Simon Foster had seven of his 15 points in the third quarter when Roanoke Valley Christian outscored the Shawnees 22-15. Shawsville cut it to seven with three minutes remaining, but the Eagles scored a couple of quick points off turnovers to secure the victory.

Simon Jones led Shawsville, which committed 35 turnovers, with 17 points and nine rebounds. Barnett Carr scored 13.

Joel Nester added 12 for the Eagles.

Narrows 64, Auburn 44: Sparked by a 14-0 run that started with four minutes left in the third quarter, the Green Wave ran away with what had been close game in its season opener in Narrows.

Junior Joe Shipbaugh, making his first varsity start, scored eight of his game-high 25 points in the decisive run.

Auburn (0-3) got 12 points from Kenny Wojciechowski.

Magna Vista 65, Laurel Park 46: In Ridgeway, the Warriors added to a three-point halftime lead by outscoring the Lancers 31-15 en route to a Piedmont District victory.

Elliot Milner led Magna Vista (1-1, 1-1) in the second half, going 6-of-7 in the half, with eight of his game-high 20 points in the fourth quarter. Jermaine Simmons poured in 19 points for Magna Vista and Marcus Hairston and Chad Blackstock each added 10 in the victory.

Eric Jones and Jeff Slade led the Lancers (0-2, 0-2) with 10 points each.

Carlisle 86, Hargrave Military 65: A 29-4 run to end the first half carried the Chiefs past the Tigers in a Virginia Independent Conference game in Martinsville.

Bryant Redd led Carlisle (2-0, 2-0) with 25 points.

Girls

Roanoke Catholic 39, Carlisle 21: Teresa Monsour scored 12 of her 14 points in the first half to lead the Celtics (2-1) past the visiting Chiefs (0-3).

Monsour scored eight points in the first half off steals, and had nine in the game.

Nicole Collins paced Carlisle (0-3) with 10 points.
