BISHOP, MAROONS REPEL YELLOW JACKETS

Jason Bishop scored 28 points, and Jon Maher had 10 points and 12 rebounds as Roanoke withstood a second-half rally to beat Randolph-Macon 86-80 in Ashland on Tuesday night.

Kurt Axe, Randolph-Macon's leading scorer averaging 16.8 points a game, did not score in the first half. Axe then hit 10 of 18 from the field, including 7 of 12 from beyond the 3-point arc, for 31 points in the second half.

Roanoke (5-1, 3-1 Old Dominion Athletic Conference) led 36-28 at the break. The Yellow Jackets (2-3, 1-1), fueled by Axe's shooting, kept the game close.

Derek Bryant had 14 points for the Maroons, who held a 47-28 rebounding advantage. Bishop was 13-for-15 from the free-throw line.

Brad Shanfelt had 13 points for the Yellow Jackets.

In other games:

Richmond 73, Radford 67: Eric Poole scored six points during a 12-3 run late in the game to help the Spiders stymie a Highlanders rally.

Richmond (3-2) led 32-23 at the half, but the lead disappeared as the Radford (2-2) tied the score at 43 on a layup by Eric Bowens with 11:35 left.

The lead changed hands four times until Jarrod Stevenson slashed through the defense for a layup and a 53-52 Richmond lead with 5:18 left.

Poole scored six of the Spiders' next 10 points, and his dunk following a steal gave the Spiders a 63-55 lead with 1:52 remaining.

Stevenson led Richmond with a career-high 18 points. Daryl Oliver's 16 points included a school-record 14-for-14 from the free-throw line. Poole added 13 points.

Jason Lansdown, who was averaging 14.7 points a game, led Radford with 25 points, while Anthony Walker added 12 and Bowens 11.

George Washington 76, James Madison 68: In Harrisonburg, Yegor Mescheriakov scored 25 points, including 4-for-4 free-throw shooting, as the Colonials beat the Dukes.

George Washington (3-2) never trailed, although it led by double figures only three times in the second half.

James Madison (2-3) closed to within 47-44 with 11:08 remaining on an 8-2 run sparked by a Darren McLinton 3-pointer. Then George Washington began pulling away with a 13-7 run that included two 3-pointers and two free throws from Kwame Evans to made it 60-51 with 7:47 left. Evans was 4 for 7 on 3-pointers and finished with 22 points and nine rebounds.

The Dukes cut the lead to five points twice in the final five minutes, but the Colonials came back with a 6-0 streak capped by Alexander Koul's layup to lead 74-63 with 15 seconds left.

South Florida 67, Old Dominion 61: In Norfolk, Chucky Atkins scored 19 points, including three consecutive 3-pointers in the final minutes, to help the Bulls down the Monarchs.

Old Dominion (2-4) trailed by as many as seven points early in the second half before taking the lead 46-45 on Mark Poag's layup with 13:55 left. The Bulls (3-0) kept the Monarchs in sight until Atkins started hitting his 3-pointers.

South Florida trailed 54-50 when Atkins began his 9-0 run for a 59-54 Bulls lead with 6:04 left.

The Monarchs rallied to tie the score at 61 on an Odell Hodge jumper with 3:02 left. That was the last Monarch score as South Florida went 4-for-4 from the free-throw line and got a jumper from Atkins to end the scoring.

No.2 Villanova 70, Miami 68: Villanova blew a nine-point lead in the final 53 seconds before Kerry Kittles hit a layup with 1.8 seconds left to lift the second-ranked Wildcats past the Hurricanes in Miami.

Miami rallied from a 67-58 deficit and tied the game on Steve Edwards' 3-pointer with 12.4 seconds to go.

Kittles then drove through the lane as a defender fell down and hit the winning layup - his only points of the second half.

The Wildcats (6-0 overall, 2-0 Big East) are off to their best start since 1984-85, when they won the national championship.

The Hurricanes (3-1, 1-1) lost despite their frantic rally in the last minute.

No.4 Arizona 84, Montana 66: In Tucson, Ariz., Joseph Blair scored 16 points and grabbed 13 rebounds as the Wildcats shook off some early trouble and defeated the Grizzlies.

The Wildcats struggled early as Montana took a 12-11 lead with 13 minutes to go in the first half, but Arizona came back with 10 unanswered points, including two baskets by Blair.

No.7 Memphis 89, Georgia St. 69: In Memphis, Tenn., Mingo Johnson and Lorenzen Wright scored 25 points each, and Wright grabbed 17 rebounds to lead the Tigers over the Panthers.

Wright, who has reached double figures in scoring and rebounding in every game, connected on 6-of-9 from the field and made 13-of-21 free throws as the Tigers (4-0) built a nine-point halftime advantage and won going away.

Terrence Brandon led the Panthers (0-3) with 26 points and 13 rebounds.

No.12 Iowa 78, N. Iowa 73: In Cedar Falls, Iowa, Jess Settles scored 14 of his season-high 20 points in the first half to help the Hawkeyes over the Panthers.

Northern Iowa led by as many as nine points early and kept it close throughout even though Iowa (6-1) enjoyed a big advantage in rebounding and at the free-throw line.

The Hawkeyes finally subdued the Panthers (2-1) with the help of a clutch basket by Ryan Bowen, who finished with 12 points.

No.8 Mississippi St. 123, Troy St. 73: In Starkville, Miss., Darryl Wilson scored 26 points to pace three 20-point scorers and the Bulldogs set a school scoring record in a victory over Troy State.

Dontae Jones added 21 points, including six straight as Mississippi State (4-0) got over the 100-point mark on his layup with 5:59 left. Marcus Bullard added 20, including five 3-pointers.

Troy State (1-4) capped a nine-day road trip with its fourth straight loss.

Wilson broke the school career record for 3-pointers (167) set by Tony Watts from 1989-92.

No.22 Michigan 69, LSU 68: In Baton Rouge, La., freshman Louis Bullock rebounded a missed free throw, drove the length of the court and sank a 12-footer with 3.8 seconds left to give the Wolverines a win over the Tigers.

Bullock got the ball when LSU's Landers Nolley missed two foul shots. LSU had a final chance with three seconds left but Ronnie Henderson stepped out of bounds just past midcourt.

It was the fourth victory in a row - all on the road - for Michigan (6-2). LSU (2-3) was playing the third of eight home games.

In other games:

Shandue McNeill led a balanced St.Bonaventure attack with 14 points as the Bonnies defeated Niagara 77-55.

With the score tied at 8-8 with 14:00 left in the first half, the Bonnies went an 11-2 run to open up a 19-10 advantage. St.Bonaventure (1-2) extended its lead to as much as 17 before a late Niagara (2-3) run brought the score to 36-26 at halftime. ... Antonio Reynolds scored 27 points and grabbed 12 rebounds to lead Rhode Island to a 78-61 victory over Northeastern. Rhode Island (4-0) led by nine points several times in the first half and never trailed. Northeastern (0-3) struggled from the floor, shooting 29 percent. over Florida State, capping a wild final minute in which the lead changed hands four times. The outcome left Tulane at 3-2, Florida State at 3-1.

Women

Bridgewater 72, W&L 45: Bridgewater College head coach Laura Mapp won her 475th career basketball game as the Eagles downed Washington and Lee 72-45 in Old Dominion Athletic Conference action in Bridgewater.

For a third consecutive game, Bridgewater never trailed.

Jennifer Young led Bridgewater with 14 points. Washington and Lee's Sandra Holmes led all scorers with 21 points.

Notes

HOLLISTER SUSPENDED: Virginia Tech forward Michelle Hollister has drawn a one-game suspension from the Virginia Tech women's basketball team and will miss the Hokies' game with Virginia today.

Coach Carol Alfano suspended Hollister for a violation of team policy.

Hollister, a 6-1 sophomore, started Tech's first two games and is averaging 13 points and 11 rebounds per game.

McCARTHY READMITTED: New Mexico State coach Neil McCarthy has been readmitted to Memorial Medical Center in Las Cruces because of continued bleeding from his nose, which required surgery last week.

The coach, who underwent minor surgery Saturday, re-entered the hospital Monday night and was listed in fair condition Tuesday, according to the university.
