HALEY MAY BE BACK IN SADDLE AGAIN

Charles Haley, the Dallas Cowboys' standout defensive end, unretired again Tuesday, then went to California for back surgery.

``My career might be over this year, but I'm looking forward to next year and getting back into the grind again,'' Haley said before leaving Texas. ``I hope I can possibly play this year, but if not, then maybe I'll have an opportunity next year.''

Haley had told The Dallas Morning News on Monday he was retiring. It was the fourth time in his career Haley had announced his retirement. But like his other retirements, this one was short-lived.

``I'll probably have surgery [Wednesday] and try to make an effort to come back and play this season if I can make the playoffs,'' said Haley, who has a herniated disk.

Coach Barry Switzer said there was no way the former James Madison University star could bounce back from surgery this season.

``The season is over for Charles and we'll see what happens about next year,'' Switzer said.

In other football:

The Chicago Bears said running back Robert Green broke his left leg during Monday's loss to the Detroit Lions and will be out for the rest of the season. Coach Dave Wannstedt said Lewis Tillman, the team's rushing leader last season who has seen little action this year, will replace Green in the lineup. Green, a former William and Mary standout, was acquired on waivers from the Washington Redskins in 1993.

RACING Elliott moving part of operation to N.C.

Bill Elliott, seeking to streamline his racing operation, will move a large portion of it to Hickory, N.C., where crew chief Mike Beam will be in complete charge of preparing the car for each week's race.

But Elliott said Elliott/Hardy Racing will continue to be based in Dawsonville, Ga. Some cars will be finished there and the research and development program and Ernie Elliott's engine program will remain.

``We're just switching from the way it was,'' Elliott said. ``Mike got us going in the right direction and we're letting him concentrate on racing - preparing the car, finishing some cars - and the weekend pit crew will come from'' Hickory.
