The Preston Oaks Baptist Church Youth Group and the Lewis-Gale Clinic were multiple prize winners during Roanoke Valley Christmas parades.
The Preston Oaks holiday float won first-place awards in the Vinton, Salem and Roanoke Christmas parades. The float, made with 12,000 napkins, 5,000 lights and two generators and staffed with 20 to 35 church members, featured a manger scene surrounded with wise men, shepherds and angels. The float was first in the best-overall-entry category in the Salem parade and won the best religious entry in the Vinton parade and the best float in Roanoke.
Lewis-Gale Clinic's entry, "Santa's Workshop" won the first place in non-religious category in Vinton; second in the best-overall-entry category in Salem; and second for floats in Roanoke.
Other winners of the three recent parades are:
Vinton - Fellowship Baptist Church, second place, religious; Campbell Memorial Presbyterian Church and Thrasher Memorial Methodist Church Youth, third, religious; Toys for Tots, mayor's award; Vinton Post Office, second, non-religious; Shag Club, third, non-religious; Vinton Raiders, Bell Atlantic best children's float; Garden of Prayer No. 7, Bell Atlantic best children's other.
Salem - Toys for Tots, third, best-overall-entry category; Mason Cove Elementary Parent Teacher Association, best organized children's group; Northside High School Band, best senior high school band.
Roanoke - Ragone Karate School, third, floats; Winston Lake Family YMCA of Winston-Salem, N.C., first, marching units; William Fleming High School ROTC, second, marching units; American Red Cross Clown Corps, third, marching units; Patrick Henry High School, first, marching bands; Andrew Lewis Middle School, second, marching bands; William Fleming, third, marching bands.
