Five Newbern Elementary School pupils gave their reasons Wednesday on why they thought educational opportunities should be equal throughout the state.
Ron Davis said he wants to be a paleontologist - "I want to dig up dinosaur bones in deserts and very hot places" - which would require a solid secondary education that would prepare him for college.
Nikki Roseberry wants to be a nurse and deliver babies.
The students, members of Amy Brooks' first-grade class, were chosen to read their goals at a media conference called by Virginians for Improved Education. The group seeks more funding for education statewide.
"Childhood is a time when everything is possible and no dream is unreachable," Brooks said. "I think I speak for every teacher in the state when I say we want all pupils like these to reach their full potential."
The pupils' goals vary.
Casey Patterson's wants to become a policeman and "fight crime." Ian Brandau wants to play soccer "and travel around the world." And Kathryn Green wants to be a tennis player "because I've seen them on TV and it looks fun."
Del. Tommy Baker, R-Dublin, a speaker at the conference, said he was not about to repeat the mistake of an earlier prominent politician who tried to spell "potato" by trying to spell "paleontologist."
