DAUGHTER'S DEBUT WAS LUCKY FOR PARENTS

Newborn Holly Katherine Rader arrived 11 days late, but her timing was perfect.

The daughter of Melanie and Brian Rader of Blacksburg was the 1,000th baby born this year at Lewis-Gale Hospital in Salem. Her debut Tuesday at 6:28 p.m. also marked the hospital's greatest number of births in a single year.

To mark the occasion, Lewis-Gale gave the 9-pound, 2-ounce Holly a $1,000 savings bond. Her parents got a basket of gourmet foods and a certificate for a night at the Roanoke Airport Marriott hotel.

Planning that hotel stay won't be easy for the Raders, also parents to Hannah, who will be 1 year old Dec. 22, and Nathan, who is 2 years and 9 months old.

"I keep asking for volunteers to babysit," Melanie Rader said Wednesday. She hadn't gotten any takers, though.
