THE PEOPLE COLUMN

Now a wealthy comedian, Whoopi Goldberg says she was once on welfare - and it was no joke.

Goldberg joined Massachusetts Sen. Edward Kennedy at a forum to criticize proposed Republican cuts in federal aid programs.

``The welfare system works. I know it works because I'm here,'' said Goldberg, who said she depended on welfare 10 years ago as a single mother, before her career took off.

Now among the highest-paid Americans, she criticized the Republican plan to cut taxes in exchange for federal program cuts.

``I make a lot of money,'' Goldberg said. ``I would love a tax cut, but I'm not looking to take it at this cost.''

John Bobbitt has decided to cut his losses with wife Lorena and sign a property settlement - the last step before the couple's divorce.

Next to his signature, Bobbitt sketched a small knife - a reference to the kitchen knife Lorena used to cut off his penis two years ago. The penis was reattached.

Lorena Bobbitt signed the property agreement earlier this year. Bobbitt dawdled. At one point, he brought her candy and flowers in an effort to regain her affections, but she refused to see him.

The divorce will be final within weeks.
