THE TIPOFF

THE WRIGHT STUFF: Professor Umberto Rodriguez-Camilloni of Virginia Tech's Department of Architecture and Urban Studies will build his lecture, from 7-8 tonight, upon the tumultuous life and revolutionary contributions to American architecture of Frank Lloyd Wright. The free presentation at the Art Museum of Western Virginia will be followed by a reception from 8-9:30 p.m.

Other activities related to the exhibition, ``Frank Lloyd Wright: Architect for America,'' which will run through Feb. 5, include a free ArtVenture children's workshop Saturday from 12:30-1:30 p.m., with artist Debbie Harris. The recommended age range is 7-12 years old, and preregistration is encouraged. Also on Saturday at 1 p.m., the museum's executive director, Joanne Kuebler, will talk in the second floor galleries about Japan's impact upon Wright. The talk will be followed at 2 p.m. by a concert of traditional Japanese and contemporary music by Shuko Watanabe. For information and to register, call 224-1222 or 342-5768.

DICKENS DOWNTOWN: Tonight and again on Dec. 15, from 6-10 p.m., travel back in time to an old-fashioned Victorian Christmas in downtown Roanoke. Carriage rides, cider, hot chocolate, roasted chestnuts, community caroling from 6 - 6:15 p.m. and ongoing entertainment and shopping opportunities are all part of Dickens of A Christmas' special ambience. Call 342-2028.

BOWLED OVER: Admission of $2 will get you into the Before the Bowl block party, sponsored by the Salem Merchants Association and the City of Salem, from 5 - 9 tonight at the Salem Farmer's Market, Broad and Main streets. A pep rally, bonfire, children's play area, games, door-prize drawings and music by the Village Idiots are all part of the fun preceding Saturday's Amos Alonzo Stagg Bowl. Call 375-3057.

Arrive early, wear comfortable shoes, and join the free guided walking tour of Salem's historic district, starting from the Salem Museum at 4 p.m. Call 389-6760.

FLIGHT OF FANTASY: ``Fantasy Land'' - the vintage Christmas display of over 100 mechanical figures, shown in past years at the soon-to-close Heironimus department store - is enchanting visitors until Dec. 24 at the Roanoke Valley History Museum. The price of $2 for adults, $1 for children and seniors, also covers admission to all of the museum's displays, including its World War II exhibit, which opened Thursday, plus a 10 percent discount at the museum's gift shop. For hours and other information, call 342-5724.

KIDDIE CHOIRS: The three choirs of 8- to 17-year olds that comprise the Roanoke College Preparatory Division of Music Children's Choir will present their Christmas concert on Saturday at 7:30 p.m. at St. Andrew's Catholic Church, Roanoke. Special guests will be Brass 5. Admission is $3; free for children age12 and younger. Call 375-2096.

CHRISTMAS CONSORT: The Baltimore Consort, formed 15 years ago to perform specific Elizabethan instrumentations, will kick off Roanoke College's Performing Arts Series Saturday at 8 p.m. in Olin Theater. The ensemble will perform traditional holiday music of Scotland, Renaissance England and Appalachia on a variety of viols, crumhorns, lutes, flutes, recorders and plucked instruments. Tickets are $10. Call 375-2333.

HOMES FOR THE HOLIDAYS: Sunday is the biggie for beautifully decorated homes hopping. From 1-4 p.m., the Buchanan Candlelight Christmas Tour, $7, will tour five homes, plus offer refreshments at the Community House. Call 254-1212.

From 2-4 p.m., Historic Fincastle Inc.'s $3 tour will include refreshments at the James Matten Early Cabin; visits to two homes; St. Marks Episcopal Church; the Bank of Fincastle's loan office; the old print shop; a display of fairy lamps and antique toys at the Hayth Residence; and singing at the Botetourt County Museum. Call 473-2772 or 473-3077.

From 2-5 p.m., the Salem Museum's tour ($8 in advance; $10 at the door) will visit five of the city's historic Broad Street homes, plus include live music and refreshments. Call 389-6760.

And the Danville Historical Society's 23rd annual walking tour of historic homes, from 1- 6 p.m., will highlight the city's first upscale automobile suburb, Forest Hills, and the influence upon its design of one of the city's most prolific architects, J. Bryant Heard - perhaps especially interesting if you also attend the Frank Lloyd Wright events listed elsewhere in this column. The $10 cost covers trolly rides, music and refreshments.
