A man who escaped from prison authorities in Ohio more than 23 years ago was captured Wednesday in Virginia after a state trooper suspected he was intoxicated.
A records check showed the driver who was pulled over in York County shortly before 1 a.m. was Darryl C. Payne, who escaped in 1972 while serving a prison term in Ohio for manslaughter and other charges, said state police spokeswoman Tammy Van Dame.
Payne, 46, passed Trooper Phillip Lowrance while driving through a construction area.
Lowrance reported that Payne was carrying identification papers with an alias. He was charged with driving while intoxicated, Van Dame said.
According to Ohio authorities, Payne escaped with two other inmates March 11, 1972.
Sgt. John Born of the Ohio Highway Patrol said one of the inmates pulled a knife on two prison guards who were returning the three to the Ohio State Reformatory in Mansfield after a trip to Cleveland.
The three prisoners forced the guards to take them back to Cleveland, then released them and fled, Born said. The other two inmates were captured a short time later.
Joe Andrews of the Ohio Department of Corrections said Payne was serving a term of three to 32 years for voluntary manslaughter, aggravated assault and malicious destruction of property, begun in April 1970.
Andrews said extradition proceedings to return Payne to Ohio would begin immediately.
