CLAIR, Laura Layuna, 84, of Roanoke, departed this life on Sunday, November 26, 1995. She was born on November 11, 1911, to the late Mr. and Mrs. George Lewis Clair of Union, W.Va. Miss Clair was the youngest of 14 children. She was a member of The National Moles Inc. and was also retired from Appalachian Power Company. Surviviors include one nephew, Lewis ``Dog"" Hale, East St. Louis, Ill.; two great-nephews, Mickey Clair of Ohio and Sterling Hale of Roanoke; cousins and friends in Gap Mills, W.Va. and Bluefield, W.Va. CUMMINGS, Rena Clingenpeel, 84, of Roanoke, died Wednesday, December 6, 1995. She was preceded in death by her husband, Willie Ernest Cummings. She was retired from the Roanoke City School system and a lifelong member of the Ninth Street Church of the Brethren. She is survived by her son and daughter-in-la w, Dennis W. and Dot Cumming; daughter and son-in-law, Doris and Jim Carter; brother, Ralph Clingenpeel; sister, Ruth Stevens; grandchildren, Cathryn Lafferty, Patricia Reynolds, Sandra Brighton, Whitney Lubeley, Julie Carter, Scott Carter; and nine great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be 10:00 a.m. Saturday at the Lotz Roanoke Chapel by the Reverend John Huffaker with burial in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at the Lotz Roanoke Chapel.

HATTON, Helen Crawford, 69, of Roanoke County, formerly of Vinton, died Thursday, December 7, 1995, in a local hospital. She was preceded in death by her husbands, Harold W. ``Jack"" Crawford, Roy E. Hatton; her son, Harold W. ``Butch"" Crawford II; her parents, William Arthur and Lucy Whitt Shelburne; four brothers, Grover Lee Shelburne, William Buford Shelburne, Gilford Allen Shelburne, Carl Francis Shelburne; a sister, Annie Mabel Shelburne Altice. Surviving are a daughter and son-in-law, Gayle Crawford and Ron Hodges, Roanoke County; three granddaughters, Robin Pendergraft, Clemmons, N.C., Lori Crawford, Amy Hodges, both of Roanoke County; six great-grandchildren, Brandon, Brittaney, Jonathan, Lindsay, Jordan, and Whitney; three sisters, Edith Shelburne Martin, Gertrude Shelburne Meredith, Eunice Shelburne Covey. JONES, Gay Matheney, 86, of Troutville, died Wednesday, December 6, 1995. She was a lifelong member of the Troutville Baptist Church where she taught Sunday School and was a member of the choir. She is survived by one daughter, Shirley Jones Peters of Troutville; one son and daughter-in-law, Larry L. and Barbara A. Jones of Fredericksburg; nine grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held Saturday, December 9, 1995, at 2 p.m. at the Troutville Baptist Churc h with Dr. E. Ray Frazier officiating. Interment will follow in the Mill Creek Cemetery. KILPATRICK, Doris Howell, 80, of Sumerduck, died Tuesday, December 5, 1995, in Warrenton Overlook Nursing Home. Born in Huddleston on November 28, 1915, she was a daughter of the late John Thomas Howell and Beulah Ferguson Howell. She was the widow of Lloyd James Kilpatrick, and was a member of Mt. Holly Baptist Church. She is survived b y a son, Jimmy Kilpatrick of Sumerduck; a brother, Alfred Howell of Troutville, and three sisters, Elsie H. Milan of Roanoke, Hazel H. Holt of Richmond and Lydia H. Miller of Rockford, Wash. Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday at Clore Funeral Home Chapel in Culpeper, with the Rev. Gordon George officiating. LESTER, Margaret T., (``Peggy''), 78, of Marietta, Ga., died Thursday, December 7, 1995 at The Fountain View Center for Alzheimer's Disease in Atlanta. She was a native of Welch, W.Va., and had lived most of her life in Glade Spring before moving to Marietta seven years ago. She was a member of the Old Glade Presbyterian Church and the widow of James F. Lester. She is survived by her daughter, Patsy L. Engleman, Marietta, Ga.; her brother, William Taylor, Abingdon; two sisters, Mrs. G. E. (Ruth) Roberts, Point Pleasant, W.Va., Mrs. Bess Orr, Abingdon; two sons-in-law, George Roberts, Point Pleasant, W.Va., and David V. Engleman, Marietta, Ga.; her sister-in-law, Mrs. Charles Taylor, Richmond, Ky.; two grandchildren, Claire Engleman and Neal Engleman. Funeral services will be held Saturday at 2 p.m. in the Old Glade Presbyterian Church, with Dr. Robert Lominack Jr. officiating. Burial will follow in the Mount Rose Cemetery, Glade Spring. McKEE, Mabel Lillian Ridings, died in peace at Montgomery Regional Hospital on Wednesday, December 6, 1995. She was born February 15, 1916 in Kentucky and raised in Pineville, Ky. She married Peter H. McKee in 1936 and moved to Christsiansburg in 1940. Dr. McKee graduated from Union College magna cum laude, earned a Masters Degree from James Madison University, and was awarded a Doctorate from the University of Virginia in 1975. During her teaching career of 42 years she taught all grades and all subjects at Christiansburg High School and later at Christiansburg Middle School. Her academic training and teaching specialities were math and physics. She was Chairman of the Math Department at Christiansburg High School for many years and earned an impressive list of teaching awards and honors. She was preceded in death by her husband of 56 years, and is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Penny and Pat Ireland of Christiansburg; a grandson, Shawn Ireland of Montana; a sister and brother-in-law, Helen and Mason Davis, Vinton. Surviving sisters-in-law are Mary McKee, Tara McKee and Lucille Jones. Mrs. McKee was a member of Main Street Baptist Church for over 50 years and also belonged to the Order of Eastern Star, VFW, DAV Auxiliary, and many professional organizations. Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Saturday, December 9, at the Main Street Baptist Church with burial to follow in Sunset Cemetery. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at the Richardson-Horne Funeral Home.

MITCHELL, Templeton E., 81, of Morningside Manor, Roanoke, passed away Thursday, December 7, 1995. He was a retired salesman from Toler Printing Company. Surviving are his son, Gary E. Mitchell, Roanoke; two grandsons, Scott I. Mitchell, M. Shaun Mitchell; two sisters, Madalene Rich, Sarah Bayse, both of Roanoke. Graveside service will be held in Sherwood Memorial Park Saturday, December 9, at 10:30 a.m. with the Rev. Frank Feather officiating. MOTLEY, Larry Clark Sr., 51, of Roanoke, passed away Tuesday, December 5, 1995. He was preceded in death by his mother and father, James and Callie Motley, two sisters, Sallie E. Thomas and Lillie P. Jones. Survivors include his wife, Priscilla Long Motley, Roanoke; three sons, Larry C. Motley Jr., Joshua Long, both of Roanoke, Vashon J. Motley, Virginia Beach; three daughters, LaTonja D. Motley, Silver Springs, Md., Crystal G. Motley and Nicole Long, both of Roanoke; brother and sister-in-law, James C. (Eula H.) Motley; one sister and brother-in-law, Perlina Maxine (Arthur) Jernigan, all of Roanoke; mother-in-law, Helen Jackson, Roanoke; stepfather, John Willie Garrett, Danville; stepbrothers, Carlton Garrett, Cheasapeake, DeRayford Garrett, Washington, D. NICHOLS, Charles Wayne, (``Charlie""), 55, of Roanoke, died Thursday, December 7,1995. He is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Susan and Andrew Mitchell of Rocky Mount; granddaughter, Brittany D. Nichols; sister, Betty J. Nichols of Roanoke; brothers, Stanford (Nick) Nichols of Roanoke, Jack Nichols of Roanoke, and Bobby Nichols of Boones Mill; devoted si ster-in-law, Barbara Nichols, wife of his deceased brother, Ralph Nichols; two nieces, four nephews; two great-nieces; two great-nephews. RUTHERFOORD, Julian Hamilton, Jr., 82, of Roanoke, Virginia, departed this life, (at home) to be with the Lord on Wednesday, December 6, 1995. Julian Rutherfoord, the son of Julian Hamilton and Willie Penn Rutherfoord, was born and raised in Roanoke. He was predeceased by his brother, John Penn Rutherfoord. He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Mary Moore Rutherfoord; two daughters and sons-in-law, Mary R. (Penny) and Charley Neil, Fincastle, Margaret R. (Peggy) and Henry F. Fisher, Roanoke; and five grandchilfen; as well as two brothers, Thomas D. Rutherfoord, Roanoke and the Rt. Rev. Wm. deJ. Rutherfoord, Fincastle; and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and special friends. Julian was devoted to God, his wife, children and grandchildren. He had an ever ready dry wit, was an avid sportsman and a true Virginia gentleman. Serving in the Atlantic and Pacific Theaters during WWII, he was a Lieutenant in the U.S. Navy assigned as commanding officer of the U.S.S. LST-616. Julian was active in civic, insurance, and democratic circles. He represented the City of Roanoke in the House of Delegates from 1948 to 1962. He was past president of Rutherfoord Insurance Agency and Surplus Lines, Inc. He was also past president of the Roanoke Association of Independent Insurance Agents, The Roanoke Kiwanis Club, Roanoke Guidance Center, and the Roanoke German Club. Mr. Rutherfoord attended Jefferson High School, Chesapeake School, and Roanoke College. He retired from Rutherfoord - Dill Corporation and was a charter member of The Episcopal Church of the Holy Spirit. The family will receive frie nds from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday, at St. Johns Episcopal Church. A memorial service will take place at noon, Saturday, December 9th, at St. Johns Episcopal Church. SANDERSON, John Henry, Sr., 82, of Buena Vista, died Tuesday, December 5, 1995, Funeral 1 p.m. Friday, Lomax Funeral Home.

SCHMEHL, Helen M., 73, of New Orleans, La., died Wednesday, December 6, 1995, in Ochsner Foundation Hospital. A native of Winnipeg, Mannitoba, Canada, she was educated at Toronto Conservatory of Music. She was a resident of Roanoke, Va., for 14 years (1963-1977) and Martinsville, Va., for 13 years (1977-1990). She was director of the Roanoke Bicentennial Commission and public relations director for Girl Scouts in the Roanoke area. She was a member of First Presbyterian Church in Roanoke and a member of the Womens Guild of the Roanoke Symphony. She worked in public relations for Martinsville-Henry County Memorial Hospital, and was a member of Broad Street Christian Church in Martinsville. She is survived by two sons, Russell H. Schmehl of New Orleans, and Richard S. Schmehl of Taft, Tenn.; a sister, Margaret Norris of Winnipeg, Mannitoba, and four grandchildren. A memorial service will be held Friday, December 8, at St. Paul's Episcopal Church in New Orleans. Lake Lawn Funeral Home, Metairie, La., is in charge of arrangements.

VEST, Ancel C., 77, of Christiansburg, died suddenly Thursday, December 7, 1995. He was born in Floyd County on October 26, 1918. Surviving are his wife, Mattie C. Vest; three stepdaughters and their husbands, Betty and David Cox, Roanoke, Elsie and Randolph Sheppard, Alta and Lonnie Caldwell, all of Christiansburg; one stepson a nd his wife, Otis and Ida Davis, Virginia Beach; four brothers, Frank Ellis, Shelby and Nelson Vest, all of Christiansburg; 14 stepgrandchildren.
