JAMES RIVER ROLLS PAST LORD BOTETOURT

James River took the initiative early and held on to thwart a Lord Botetourt rally as the Knights won the battle of Botetourt County 69-57 on Friday night in a non-district boys' game in Buchanan.

After going up by eight in the first quarter, James River (2-0) pushed its lead to 29-15 midway through the second period, when the Cavaliers (0-2) started their comeback. Lord Botetourt battled through the remaining moments of the half, cutting its deficit to six at the half.

The Cavaliers cut James River's lead to three in the third quarter, but that was as close as they would get the rest of the way.

Shahan Burrell did the dirty work for the Knights, scoring 16 points, grabbing seven rebounds and taking the charging fouls. Chris Firebaugh chipped in 13 points and Brian Shorter added 12.

Wesley Cox scored a game-high 19 points for Lord Botetourt, including a pair of 3-pointers. Jason Hunt added a dozen points for the Cavs.

GW-Danville 73, William Fleming 56: The Eagles overcame early foul trouble by scoring 49 points in the second half to earn a non-district victory over the Colonels in Danville.

GW (3-0), one of the top Group AAA teams in the state, had three starters in early foul trouble. That forced them out of their pressing, man-to-man defensive style and slowed the first-half tempo. The Eagles scored only 24 points in the first half, but still led by four. Both teams opened it up in the second half, combining for 85 points.

Fleming (3-1) was led by James Stokes' 21 points.

The Eagles were led by double-figure scorers Marques Cunningham, Bobby Wimbush, Quentin Jones and Tyrone Robertson. Wimbush had 15 points and nine rebounds and Howard Graves doled out 13 assists.

Cave Spring 64, Alleghany 58: One week after losing 70-57 to the Knights in the opener for both teams, the Mountaineers sought revenge. After splitting last season's home-and-home series, Cave Spring refused to let Alleghany even the score this time.

Four-year starting point guard Jeff Lang led Cave Spring with 20 points, the same total he had in the first meeting of the season. Power forward Alex Phillips provided the inside force for the Knights (2-1), also scoring 20 points.

Kevin Cook led Alleghany's comeback bid in the third quarter. He hit back-to-back 3-pointers in the period, helping the Mountaineers tie the score.

Cave Spring opened an advantage late in the quarter, building a five-point lead.

Cook finished with a team-high 18 points and Jay Meggison added 14 for Alleghany (0-2).

Patrick Henry 67, Waccamaw (S.C.) 56: Brooks Berry and Boo Battle combined for 28 points as the Patriots pulled away from a 43-43 tie through three quarters to defeat Waccamaw in Georgetown, S.C.

Patrick Henry (2-1) made 18 free throws in the fourth quarter, and three Waccamaw players fouled out.

Rytorian Gary led Waccamaw (2-1) with 21 points.

Girls

The Eagles saw a 12-point halftime lead dwindle to one in the closing seconds, but held on for a non-district victory over the Colonels on Fleming's floor.

With her team up by one point, Jutoria Meyers sank a pair of free throws. The Colonels' Renita Walker took the inbounds pass the length of the floor for a layup, cutting the lead to one point again, but time expired on Fleming.

Meyers and Erica Davis led GW (3-1) with 10 points each.

Revonda Barber was the leading scorer for the Colonels (2-1) with 10 points. Renita Walker finished with six points, and Shaunarey Walker added eight points and seven assists.

Heritage 48, Patrick Henry 31: The Pioneers built on a two-point halftime lead with Alicia Jordan's monster second half as they rolled over the Patriots in Lynchburg.

Jordan scored a game-high 16 points - all in the second half - and grabbed 12 rebounds. Elizabeth Thompson chipped in 14 points and eight rebounds for Heritage (2-1) and Leslie Robey added 10.

Carrie Moore led the way for the Patriots (0-2) with 13 points, and Renne Hill grabbed 10 rebounds to go with her six points.
