Parry McCluer took an early lead and held on for a 59-49 victory over Rockbridge County in a non-district boys' game Friday night in Buena Vista.
The Fighting Blues (3-0) were led by Boo Rowsey's 15 points and Nathan Floyd's 14. Parry McCluer was 12-of-16 from the free-throw line in the fourth quarter to seal the victory.
The Wildcats (0-3) got a game-high 21 points from Ricky Wright.
Laurel Park 56, Patrick County 54: Corey Flood nailed a short jumper with seven seconds left to lift the Lancers over the Cougars in a Piedmont District game in Martinsville.
Patrick County (3-1, 2-1) had tied the score at 54 when Corey Reynolds, who scored 13 points, hit two free throws. Ray Hylton led the Cougars with 16 points, including 11 in the fourth quarter to bring Patrick County back into the game.
Flood led the Lancers (1-2, 1-2) with 16 points. Rashad Wall added 11 and Tony Carter had 10.
Liberty 76, Buckingham County 59: Raymond Arrington scored 10 of his 17 points in the first quarter as the Minutemen ran to a 30-11 lead and never were threatened in a Seminole District game in Bedford.
Buckingham (2-1, 2-1) played Liberty (2-0, 2-0) on even terms the rest of the way, but the damage had been done. J.J. Coles scored 12 of his game-high 20 points in the third quarter as the Minutemen kept the Knights down.
Robert Carson and Neil Roop added 11 each for Liberty.
Dwayne Braxton and Bill Powers led Buckingham with 16 points apiece.
Nelson County 59, Staunton River 46: Chad Loving scored eight of his game-high 24 points in the third quarter as the Governors pulled away from the cold-shooting Golden Eagles in a Seminole District game in Lovingston.
Nelson County (1-2, 1-2) held Hunter Hoggatt to 14 points. Jeff English added 13 for Staunton River (1-2, 1-2).
Cave Spring 64, Alleghany 58: One week after losing 70-57 to the Knights in the opener for both teams, the Mountaineers sought revenge. After splitting last season's home-and-home series, Cave Spring refused to let Alleghany even the score this time.
Four-year starting point guard Jeff Lang led Cave Spring with 20 points, the same total he had in the first meeting of the season. Power forward Alex Phillips provided the inside force for the Knights (2-1), also scoring 20 points.
Kevin Cook led Alleghany's comeback bid in the third quarter. He hit back-to-back 3-pointers in the period, helping the Mountaineers tie the score.
Cave Spring opened an advantage late in the quarter, building a five-point lead.
Cook finished the night with a team-high 18 points and Jay Meggison added 14 for Alleghany (0-2).
Bassett 68, Dan River 59: Devonne Claybrooks scored nine of his team-high 20 points in the fourth quarter as the Bengals used solid free-throw shooting to pull away from the Wildcats in a Piedmont District game in Bassett.
Claybrooks made all three of his free-throw attempts, and his three-point play in the fourth quarter put Bassett (2-1, 2-1) up by seven after Dan River (2-1, 2-1) had cut its deficit to four.
Kennedy made four of four free-throw attempts in the fourth quarter and finished with 18 points and nine rebounds. Corie Manns added 17 points and six assists for the Bengals.
The Wildcats were led by Steve Guy, who scored 26. Antoine Reed finished with 22 points, including four 3-pointers.
Gretna 88, Martinsville 83: The Hawks pulled away in the fourth quarter and made 10 of 13 free throws to win a Piedmont District game in Gretna.
Brian Robertson and Jason Tucker scored 21 points each for the Hawks (1-2, 1-2).
Manti Venable led Martinsville (1-2, 1-2) with 25 points, Jason Wells had 12 and LaVere Breedlove added 10.
The Bulldogs converted a pair of three-point plays in the fourth quarter to cut their deficit to three, but got no closer in the final period.
Carlisle 103, Lynwood Christian 69: The Chiefs (4-0) ran to a 23-7 lead and cruised past Lynwood Christian in Martinsville.
Joseph McClinton had 21 points for Carlisle , Chad Martin scored 14, Lamont Franklin and Russ Mason 11 and Marty Stanley added 10.
Carroll County 58, Galax 49: The Cavaliers broke open a close game in Hillsville late in the second quarter, then held off the Maroon Tide to earn their first victory.
Brad Richardson scored eight of his 14 points in the fourth quarter as Carroll County (1-2) pulled away following a Galax rally. Ryan Morris led the Cavaliers with 15 points.
Carroll scored three consecutive baskets to end the first half, then pushed its lead to 14 points in the third quarter.
Nate Noel hit four 3-pointers to lead Galax (1-2) with 15 points. Jeff Ross scored 10.
Girls
E.C. Glass 78, Franklin County 60: The Hilltoppers outscored the Eagles 25-7 in the fourth quarter to win a foul-marred non-district game in Rocky Mount.
The teams combined to shoot 109 free throws in the game. E.C. Glass was 28-for-60 from the line, 11-of-26 in the fourth quarter as four Franklin County players fouled out.
The Eagles were 22-for-49 from the line. Penee Clayborne led Franklin County (1-3) with 14 points, Kelli Preston had 12 and Lashon Brooks added 11.
Tia Scott led E.C. Glass with 20.
