BYINGTON HITS HIGH WITH 25 POINTS

Former Salem standout Mark Byington scored a career-high 25 points Friday night to lead North Carolina-Wilmington to an 85-56 victory over Alabama State in the consolation game of the Delta Air Lines Classic in Cincinnati.

Byington hit a school-record seven 3-point goals and led a 37-9 surge in the first 15 minutes. Byington had 15 points as UNC-Wilmington (2-4) took control.

Preston McGriff matched his career high with 25 points and had 16 rebounds as UNC-Wilmington dominated the boards 50-33.

Alabama State (2-3) fell out of the game quickly because it couldn't hit its shots. The Hornets hit just 1-of-11 to open the game and were 4-of-25 (16 percent) during UNC-Wilmington's 37-9 run.

Darrick McGriff scored 13 points to lead Alabama State.

In other games:

Auburn 63, Liberty 58: Guard Lance Weems scored 18 points to lead Auburn to a 63-58 come-from-behind victory over Liberty in the first game of the Dr Pepper Invitational Basketball Tournament in Waco, Texas.

Weems was one of three scorers in double figures for Auburn (5-1). Center Pat Burke chimed in with 14 points, while guard Wes Flanigan added 12. Forward Franklin Williams led Tigers defenders with nine rebounds, one more than Burke.

Guard Larry Jackson was the only Liberty player in double figures, scoring 11 points. Center Peter Aluma led the Flames (3-2) with eight rebounds.

Auburn advances to the tournament championship game tonight in The Ferrell Center at Baylor University.

No.6 Georgetown 113, Sacramento St. 58: In Landover, Md., Georgetown made 24 steals, forced 37 turnovers and rested guard Allen Iverson for the final 16:38 as the Hoyas (7-1) ripped the Hornets.

During one sequence early in the game, the Hornets (2-4) were outscored 10-0 without attempting a shot.

It was Georgetown's biggest margin of victory since a 112-39 victory over District of Columbia in the 1989-90 season.

David Victor and Tim Pompey led the Hornets with 14 points apiece.

No.9 Connecticut 93, Yale 66: In Hartford, Conn., Ray Allen had 29 points and Doron Sheffer a career-high 27 to lead the Huskies to a victory over the Bulldogs.

Connecticut (6-1) took a 10-0 lead before Yale (3-4) even got off a shot. Allen and Sheffer both had 3-pointers in that run.

Yale was led by Bernie Colson with 17 points, the only player in double figures.

No.17 Cincinnati 100, Wagner 64: In Cincinnati, the Bearcats completed a romp through their annual tournament as Art Long scored 18 points in a win over Wagner for the Delta Air Lines Classic championship.

Immediately after the game, Cincinnati (3-0) headed for Arkansas and a nationally televised game this afternoon.

Tony Rice had 16 points to lead Wagner, which shot 33 percent.

No.21 Illinois 89, SE Missouri 70: In Champaign, Ill., Richard Keene scored 18 points as the Illini beat Southeast Missouri in the first round of the Illini-Pepsi Classic.

The Illini (5-0) started slowly and made only 43 percent of its shots for the game, but that was enough to overwhelm Southeast Missouri (2-3), which shot only 40 percent and had 24 turnovers.

William Eley had 17 points and seven rebounds for Southeast Missouri, despite getting his fourth foul with 14:20 to play.

Women

Roanoke 99, Eastern Mennonite 65: Former Cave Spring standout Amy Athey scored 18 points as the Maroons rolled to an easy Old Dominion Athletic Conference victory over Eastern Mennonite in Salem.

Lori Boyd (Floyd County) added 17 points and five rebounds for Roanoke (6-1, 4-0), which took a 31-9 lead in the first half and never looked back. Carrie McConnell (Pulaski County) had 14 points and Marcee Hufton (William Byrd) chipped in 13 for Roanoke.

Eastern Mennonite (5-2) was led by freshman Anika Egli, who scored 14.

East Tennessee State 84, Radford 69: Freshman Rachel Glass scored 32 points to lead the Buccaneers past the Highlanders in a non-conference game in Johnson City, Tenn.

Glass hit 10 of 13 shots from the floor and made 11 of 12 free throws. Amy Engle added 17 points and Trenille McClellan had 12 for the Buccaneers (3-3).

Radford (2-5) was led by Dede Logemann, who scored a game-high 34 points on 17-of-19 shooting.

Emory and Henry 63, Hollins 52: Sallie Lefler scored 18 points to lead the Wasps past Hollins in an ODAC game at Hollins.

Angie Simpkins added 12 for Emory and Henry.

Hollins (0-8) was led by Sara Tweedy, who scored a game-high 19 points. Amy Worley added 16.
