NS ELECTS VICE PRESIDENT FOR PROPERTIES

DAVID A . COX has been elected vice president-properties for Norfolk Southern Corp. He has responsibility for all of the company's real estate and industrial development activities, including two subsidiaries, Pocahontas Land Corp. and Lambert's Point Docks.

Cox began his career with the railroad in 1956, working in several engineering and real estate positions before becoming director of real estate for the company's predecessor, Norfolk & Western Railway, in Roanoke in 1969. After that, he was director of industrial real estate, director of industrial development and assistant vice president-industrial development.

Also at Norfolk Southern, THOMAS E. RAPPOLD has been appointed assistant vice president-sales and service in the coal marketing department, succeeding J. WILLIAM FOX JR., who was elected vice president-coal marketing Oct. 1.

MARK H. BOWER succeeds Rappold as assistant vice president-international coal and CONNIE BROCKENBROUGH-VAUGHN succeeds Bower as director-coal market development.

AGRICULTURE

WILLIAM P. FREEMAN has been re-elected to a three-year term as Virginia Farm Bureau Federation's District 3 director. Freeman, who operates a livestock farm and apple-packing business in Giles County, represents Farm Bureau members in Bland, Carroll, Floyd, Giles, Montgomery, Pulaski and Wythe counties.

BANKING

First Union Corp.'s Capital Management Group has announced the promotion of ROBERT M. BROWN JR. to trust counsel and compliance manager for First Union National Bank of Virginia,

BRADLEY L. ELKINS to regional trust officer and SARA BATTIN to regional sales manager.

Brown is internal legal counsel for the group's personal trust services. Elkins is responsible for managing the personal trust office in Norfolk and Roanoke. Battin is in charge of efforts to produce new personal trust business in Harrisonburg, Roanoke, Richmond, Winchester and Norfolk.

JOHN ASBURY of Roanoke has been promoted to senior vice president at NationsBank. Asbury, who joined NationsBank in 1990, is the commercial banking manager in the Mountain Region, which includes Roanoke, Lynchburg and eastern New River Valley.

PAULA SPRINKLE JONES has joined Signet Mortgage Corp. in Roanoke as a loan originator. Jones formerly was a loan originator with Virginia First Mortgage, and before that, a real estate agent with Boone and Co.

HEALTH CARE

BARBARA L. SEALS, a licensed professional counselor, has been appointed director of the Lewis-Gale Counseling Center in Lexington. She joined Lewis-Gale in 1988 as a counselor for the employee assistance program.

KATHRYN ST. CLAIR, who is a clinical social worker, has been named outpatient therapist at the Lewis-Gale Counseling Center. She will oversee patient assessments, therapy, case management and consultations. St. Clair joined Lewis-Gale Psychiatric Center as director of psychodrama in 1988. She was adult program director and social worker until 1993, when she entered private practice and also taught at Radford University.

INSURANCE

DONNIE ALDERMAN has been appointed systems administrator of the Roanoke office of Lawyers Title Insurance Corp. She has been employed with the company for two years, most recently as escrow technician at the closing office, also in Roanoke.

CLAIRE KENNETT has joined the company as a commercial underwriter. She has 11 years of experience in the title insurance business, most recently as manager for Escrow Title Agency, Settlement Title Agency and Title Research Group, all agencies of LTIC.

ILONA SCAGGS has been appointed special projects assistant of the Roanoke office. She has been with the company for two years and will maintain her current position of title plant coordinator along with her new responsibilities.

KIMBERLY MONTGOMERY has been named exam department coordinator at the Roanoke branch. Montgomery has been with Lawyers Title for more than three years, having previously been an underwriter and a title clerk.

GORDON BARBOUR has been employed as a courier at Lawyers Title. Before joining the company, he was general manager of Texas Tavern in Roanoke for more than 40 years.

MANUFACTURING

FRED J. BETZ, president and chief executive officer of Nationwide Homes in Martinsville, has been named winner of the 1995 S.A. Walters Award. The award is given annually by the Building Systems Councils of the National Association of Home Builders to a member who is considered to have made a significant contribution to the building systems industry.
