FORMER PH STAR LEADS ECU TO WIN

East Carolina's Tim Basham, a former player at Patrick Henry High School, scored a career-high 27 points and hit three consecutive 3-pointers during a key second-half run to give the Pirates a 74-62 win over Coastal Carolina Saturday in Conway, S.C.

East Carolina (3-1), which led 32-31 at halftime, opened the second half with a 16-6 run to build an 11-point lead with about 15 minutes left. The run included Basham's three straight 3-pointers.

Joining Basham in double figures for the Pirates were Othello Meadows, with 11 points, and Von Bryant, with 10. Bryant also had nine rebounds.

Maurice Ingram scored 21 points and grabbed 10 rebounds to lead Coastal Carolina (2-3). Ben Avery scored 17 points.

In other games:

Ferrum 63, Newport News 57: Michael Hunter poured in 30 points to lead the Panthers at Ferrum.

Ferrum (3-4) made 16 of 21 free-throw attempts and outrebounded the Builders (2-10) by 12.

Hunter grabbed 10 rebounds to lead the Panthers and was 9-for-10 from the line. Marcus Toney added 14 points, six rebounds and four assists for the Panthers.

Liberty 73, Centenary 71: In Waco, Texas, Peter Aluma had 20 points and 13 rebounds to lead the Flames (5-1) over the Gents (3-4) in the consolation game of the Dr Pepper Classic.

Larry Jackson added 18 points, and Jay Boykin had 13 for Liberty, which trailed 37-36 at halftime.

Toledo 92, Old Dominican 80: Craig Thames scored 30 points as the Rockets won at Toledo, Ohio.

Casey Shaw had 15 points, Matt Gladieux 14 and Brett Fedak 10 for Toledo (3-2).

Odell Hodge put in 16, Mario Mullen 15 and E.J. Sherod 11 for the Monarchs (2-5).

Pittsburgh 72, Virginia Commonwealth 69: Andre Howard hit a 10-foot jumper from the baseline with 40 seconds remaining and the Panthers recovered from a 12-point second-half deficit to beat the Rams (5-3) at the Richmond Coliseum.

The Rams, who led by 16 points in the first half, committed 28 turnovers.

Marlow Talley led VCU with 16 points.

Ohio St. 92, George Mason 87: At Fairfax, Jermaine Tate scored 19 points and grabbed 12 rebounds to lead the Buckeyes.

Ohio State (4-0), which let an 11-point second-half lead slip away, trailed George Mason (2-2) with 2:30 left to play. The Buckeyes then outscored the Patriots 10-3 in the final two minutes.

George Mason's Nate Langley had a game-high 26 points.

Furman 77, Lynchburg 66: At Greenville, S.C., Jason Stewart scored 19 points, and Andre Kerr added 17 points and 12 rebounds to lead the Paladins over the Division III Hornets.

All five of Stewart's field goals came from behind the 3-point line. The freshman forward hit 5 of 9 from the field to help Furman (2-3) snap a three-game losing streak. Otis Tucker led Lynchburg (5-3) with 12 points.

Randolph-Macon 81, Hampden-Sydney 78, OT: Kurt Axe scored a basket and added a free throw with 1 second left in overtime to give Randolph-Macon (3-3, 2-1) an ODAC win at Hampden-Sydney.

Randolph-Macon was paced by Doug Turner's 31 points. The Tigers (5-3, 1-3) were led by Ryan Odom's 19 points.

Emory & Henry 100, Guilford 78: Dytanyon Norman, formerly of Bassett High School, scored 26 points and Jason Light of Floyd County added 22 as the Wasps (5-3,1-2) beat the Quakers (5-5, 1-4) in an ODAC game played in Greensboro.
