Rodney Cundiff of Boones Mill was presented the second annual Curtis Turner Memorial Hard-Charger Award during the New River Valley Speedway awards banquet Saturday night at the Salem Civic Center.
Cundiff beat out 15 other drivers who earned the weekly award during the season. Only drivers selected during the year were eligible for the annual selection. Cundiff won the award four times during the season. He received a $1,000 check from R.B. Duncan, award sponsor, along with a designer trophy from Mrs. Bunny Turner-Hall, widow of the racing legend.
Other awards were presented by Ronnie Snoddy, track promoter.
Floyd's Jeff Agnew claimed his second consecutive NASCAR Winston Racing Series Late Model Stock Car championship. It was his fourth in the track's eight year history. Hank Turman of Indian Valley won the Limited Sportsman title, while Christiansburg's Jimmy Hinkley took the Modified Mini Stock crown. Wayne Moore of Radford and Randy Taylor of Madison won the Mini and Pure Stock titles.
Rookie-of-the-year awards went to Philip Morris, LMSC; Aaron Deplazes, Limited; David Kirk, Modified Mini; Dennis Worley, Mini Stock, and Randy Taylor, Pure Stock.
NASCAR's Gold Wrench award winners went to Lawrence Poff, Lee Lilley and Kenny Altis. Most popular drivers, as voted by the fans, were Ronnie Thomas, LMSC; Hank Turman, Limited; K.J. Bishop, Modified Mini; Danny Gordon, Mini Stock, and Randall Custer, Pure Stock.
Best appearing car honors were taken by Tim Zock, LMSC; Tam Topham, Limited; Gene Duncan, Modified Mini; Joe Havens, Mini Stock and John McMahan, Pure Stock. Best appearing crew awards were received by Chad Harris, LMSC: Ronnie Byrd, Limited; Charlie Smith, Modified Mini; Robert Cox, Mini Stock, and Ronnie Vaught, Pure Stock.
