A Virginia Tech senior is one of two state university students to be awarded Rhodes Scholarships.
Mark Patrick Embree of Springfield and Old Dominion University student Samantha Salvia, of Norristown, Pa., learned Saturday that they were among 32 American recipients of the award to study at Oxford, England.
Embree learned he won after a regional interview in Atlanta. He flew back to Virginia late Saturday.
``It was total shock,'' said Embree, 21, who will graduate in the spring with degrees in computer science and mathematicsa
Recipients of the Rhodes Scholarship get two years of study - with free tuition, room and board - at Oxford. Embree plans to study numerical analysis, which uses computer models to solve real-life problems Salvia will study the ``ethical, political and economic considerations'' in environmental engineering.
At Virginia Tech, Embree participated in an outreach program for public schools as a computer programmer. He is a member of the University Honors Associates academic society.
The last time a Tech student won a Rhodes Scholarship was in the 1960s, a spokeswoman said.
