ALLEN, Rev. Noah Ervin, 89, of Route 4, Bedford, passed away on Saturday, December 9, 1995 in Bedford County Memorial Hospital. He was born in Elliston on August 20, 1906. Rev. Allen was ordianed a minister in the Church of God General Assembly, Cleveland, Tenn. in 1960. He was privileged to be the founder of the Church of God in Amherst and the Bedford Church of God on Main Street, while pastoring and evangelizing in several other states. He is suvived by his wife of 69 years, Ella Simmons Allen; a son, Thomas Lee Allen, Roanoke; three daughters, Hazel Gertrude Woods, Clarksville, Florence Verna Steen and Margaret Jeanette Dudley both of Bedford; 28 grandchildren; 47 great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be conducted 11 a.m. Tuesday, December 12, 1995 from The Church of God, Bedford by the Rev. John Ivins with interment in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends today from 7 to 9 p.m. at Updike Funeral Home, Bedford.

BOYD, Alice Bryant, (``Ruth""), 82, of Pulaski, died Sunday, December 10, 1995 i n the Pulaski Community Hospital. She was born in Pulaski, Va. on July 11, 1913 and was the daughter of the late Charles Richard Bryant and Anna Pope Bryant. She was a charter member of the Pauline Church of Christ, Pulaski, a member of the Good Neighbor Club and the Home Demonstration Club both of Pulaski. Surviving include her husband of 64 years, Clarence E. Boyd Sr., Pulaski; two sons and daughters-in-law, C.E. and Beth Boyd Jr., Pulaski, Taylor and Wilma Boyd, Dublin; four grandchildren, Tammie Hamblin, Pulaski, Lisa Hamilton, Dublin, Michael Boyd, Dublin, Teresa Boyd, Dublin; four great-grandchildren; one sister, Mary ``Dot"" Bentley, Virginia Beach. Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Tuesday from the Stevens Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Robert Owens and the Rev. Bud Moore officiating. Burial will follow in Oakwood Cemetery. CHEEK, Clarence Rucker, 94, of Route 4, Maple Shade Farm, Bedford, passed away on Sunday, December 10, 1995, in Woodhaven Nur sing Home. He was born in Bedford County on February 1, 1901, a son of the late John Elisha Cheek and Annie Robertson Cheek. He was preceded in death by a grandchild, Stuart Cheek. He was a retired farmer, a member of Hickory Grove United Methodist Church and a member of United Methodist Men. He is survived by his wife, Hettie Sims Cheek; two daughters, Regina C. Gross, Bedford, Mildred C. Adkins, Blue Ridge; four sons, John Henry Cheek, Bedford, Lyle C. Cheek, Lynchburg, Cicero (``C. T."") Cheek, Richmond, Bobby R. Cheek, Goode; nine grandchildren, and nine great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be conducted on Tuesday, December 12, 1995, at 2 p.m. from Updike Funeral Chapel, Bedford, by the Rev. Eugene Condrey and the Rev. Floyd Gross, with interment in Virginia Memorial Park. The family will receive friends at the funeral home Monday from 7 to 9 p.m., and at other times at the residence.

COFER, Heath H., 101, of Roanoke, died Saturday, December 9, 1995, at the Veterans Administration Medical Center in Salem. He was a U. S. Army veteran of World War I, and was preceded in death by his wife, Nannie Thompson Cofer. Surviving are several nieces and nephews. Graveside services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Tuesday, December 12, 1995, in Sunset Cemetery, Christiansburg, with the Rev. Richard H. Horne officiating. CRABTREE, Rev. James Lee, 81, of Route 2, Narrows, died Saturday evening, December 9, 1995, in Giles Memorial Hospital, Pearisburg. He was born in Carrboro, N.C., on June 21, 1914, and was the son of the late Charlie Manley and Rose Lee King Crabtree. Rev. Crabtree attended the Missionary Training Institute in Nyack, N.Y., Guilford College in Greensboro, N.C., and Duke University in Durham, N.C. He served in the Missionary Christian Alliance Church in North Carolina, the Quaker Church (Society of Friends) in North Carolina and Virginia, and joined the Methodist Holston Conference in October of 1950. Since that time, he has served in the Mechanicsburg Charge, Burns Chapel, Mount Zion, Shiloh, Wessendonck, Shady Grove and Salem. In the New River Circuit, he served Morgans Chapel, Rockford, Belsprings, Parott and Highland churches. In the Bristol, Tenn., Circuit, he served Sinking Springs and Paperville churches. In the Draper Circuit, he served Draper, Cecils Chapel, Allisonia, Glen Wood and Sylvatus churches. In the Eggleston Circuit, he served Eggleston, Bear Springs, Green Valley, Wesley's Chapel and Mountain View churches. In the Honaker Circuit, he served Honaker, Austins Chapel, Blackford and Millers Chapel churches. And in his last charge before his retirement, he served the Narrows Circuit: Kathleen Memorial and Hales Chapel churches. He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Pauline Wray Crabtree; four sons and their wives, Adrian and Jean Crabtree of Christiansburg, Charles and Gloria Crabtree of Blue Ridge, George Timothy and Hele n Crabtree of Lebanon, and Paul and Dena Crabtree of Virginia Beach; 10 grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday in the chapel of Riffe's Funeral Service in Narrows, with the Rev. Ralph Kidd, the Rev. Dr. Don Scott and the Rev. J. D. Clark officiating. Burial will follow in the Boyd Cemetery, Route 2, Narrows. The family will gather with their friends at the funeral home from 6 to 9 p.m. Monday.

LINDSAY, Odessa Hicks, 83, of Charlottesville, died Saturday, December 9, 1995, in a local nursing home. Born in Carroll County on May 25, 1912, she was a daughter of the late William Terry and Ann Gregory Hicks. Mrs. Lindsay was a First Lieutenant in the Army Nursing Corps during World War II, serving in Verdun, France. She was a public health nurse in Amelia County and Albemarle County. She enjoyed her work and her patients enjoyed her. Mrs. Lindsay retired from public health nursing in 1974. Survivors include her sister, Ocie Hicks Hylton of Hillsville; several nieces and nephews, and great-nieces and great-nephews. Mrs. Lindsay was preceded in death by her husband, Kenneth Lindsay; two sisters, Inez Hicks Gardner and Cumbia Hicks Banks; three brothers, Maynard Hicks, Elbert Jackson Hicks and William Terrence Hicks. A funeral service wil be conducted at 11 a.m. Tuesday in the Teague Chapel, Charlottesville, with Ralph Carter officiating. Interment will follow in Monticello Memory Gardens. McGUIRE, Linda Carol, 48, of Pembroke, died Saturday, December 9, 1995 in Montgomery Regional Hospital in Blacksburg, Va. Born in Pembroke on September 18, 1947, she was a daughter of Mary Helen Mays Hilton of Pearisburg and the late Raymond Hilton. She was a member of Pembroke Christian Church and an employee of VPI & SU in Housing Services. Surviving are her husband, Cleaven McGuire; a son and daughter-in-law, Raymond Edward and Tammy Susanne McGuire of Pembroke; her mother; two brothers, Clinton Hilton of Chicago, Ill., and James Hilton of Pembroke; one sister, Phyllis Lucas of Ripplemeade. Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Tuesday, December 12, 1995 in the Kendall Funeral Home Chapel in Pembroke with the Rev. Barry Franklin and the Rev. Eddie Kendall officiating. PAIT, Evelye Sidner, 58, of Roanoke, passed away Friday, December 8, 1995, at Lewis-Gale Hospital. She was active in the Head Start program in the Roanoke Valley and a longtime activist on behalf of the disenfranchised. Mrs. Pait was born in New York City on June 12, 1937, and grew up in Miami Beach, Fla. She graduated magna cum laude from the University of Florida in 1957. Upon returning to Miami Beach, she was nominated for ``Woman of the Year"" after organizing an after-school educational program for disadvantaged youth. Mrs. Pait moved to the Asheville, N.C., area in 1962. As part of the War on Poverty, she organized occupational training programs for disadvantaged youth, particularly African-Americans. She also worked extensive ly with area businesses to open more opportunities to these groups. She was hired by the late Bristow Hardin, executive director of Total Action Against Poverty (TAP), to work in training at Roanoke's Head Start program in 1968. As Director of Organizational Planning, Mrs. Pait continued her work in occupational training for disenfranchised youth. She was also a leader in Roanoke's formative civil rights and equal rights movements, bringing together racially diverse groups through mediation and reconciliation workshops. After leaving Head Start, Mrs. Pait wrote for for The Roanoke Times and Roanoker Magazine. She was selected by Roanoke City Council to represent the area's handicapped population in planning and policy issues. She was also active in counseling at several centers for battered women and alcoholics and worked as an occupational trainer. Mrs. Pait was also an accomplished tennis player, having won both the Florida state doubles title and her age group's singles title at the Orange Bowl Tennis Classic as a senior in high school. She later was a member of the Roanoke Valley tennis team that won the USTA Adult League national championships in 1993. Mrs. Pait also helped to organize a program providing Roanoke inner-city youth with tennis equipment and coaching. As a member of Deliverance Church Ministries, Mrs. Pait served as the Director of Education and the Superintendent of Sunday Schools. She sang in the Voices of Deliverance choir and was significant in developing and mobilizing the church's education and outreach ministry programs. Mrs. Pait is survived by her four children, Robert Pait of Charlottesville, Lisa McKenna, David Pait and Jonathan Pait, all of Roanoke. She is also survived by eight grandchildren. Funeral arrangements are being handled by Oakey's Funeral Service, South Chapel. Funeral services will be held 12 noon Monday, December 11, 1995 at Deliverance Church Ministries, 2002 Mercer Ave. in Roanoke. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial donations be sent to Deliverance Church Ministries.

PITTS, John Wiley, 45, of Roanoke, died Sunday, December 10, 1995 in a local hospital. He was preceded in death by a brother, Randall Pitts. Surviving are his wife, Deborah H. Pitts; parents, Wiley and Doris Pitts; sister, Rhonda Faye Pitts; brother, David Pitts; a godson, Andrew Potter; a niece, Jennifer Pitts all of Roanoke; and many other friends and relatives. SOLANO, Pedro N., (``Pete""), of Roanoke, died Saturday, December 9, 1995. He was a retired accountant and for many years owned and operated a business as a major vendor to the U.S. Military Sales System in the Far East. Pedro was born on October 22, 1928, in Albay, Philippines, where as a young boy he suffered through the Japanese occupation. He was a graduate of Arellano University. Since moving to the United States, Pedro was employed by the Waddington Security Service and was an active volunteer for the American Cancer Society in San Diego. Most recently, Pedro was occupied as a ``greeter"" at the Roanoke Wal-Mart and was a member of the Roanoke Philippine American Association. Pedro is survived by his wife, Enriqueta (Ernie); two children, Romeo of San Diego, Calif. and Nancy Fong of Vancouver; two stepchildren, Ann Manlove and Rick Diones of Roanoke; seven grandchildren, Farrah and Yashmin Barton and Richard and Kris Diones of Roanoke, Kyle and Kyla Solano of San Diego, and Brianna Fong of Canada. In addition, Pedro is survived by his mother, Paz Solano; brothers, Cleto and Adriano of the Philippines, Crispin of Japan, and Dominador of California; sisters, Zeny Bombase, Sally De Leon, and Nena Gloria also of California and Lita Solano of Canada. His funeral will be held at Our Lady of Nazareth Catholic Church 10 a.m. Wednesday, December 13, 1995. The family will be receiving friends and relatives at Oakey's South Chapel on Brambleton Ave. Tuesday from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. A short prayer service will be held at Oakey's South Chapel at 7 p.m. Tuesday.
