LEOS CLUB TAKES ITS INSPIRATION FROM THE LIONS

Students at Pulaski County High School have started a new service club that is based on and sponsored by a well-established community organization.

The Leo Club, sponsored by the Dublin Lions Club, resembles the Lions in many ways. Leo stands for leadership, experience and opportunity, and the club is designed to develop such qualities as generosity, responsibility and dedication to one's community.

The club has 39 members from all four grades. Officers are Noah Conner Jr., president; Vivian Rash, vice president; Georgie Hickam, secretary; and Becca Conner, treasurer.

Club members recently donated 30 Leo Love Lions stuffed toys to the Pulaski County Sheriff's Office. Officers will give the toys to children they need to comfort, such as those at the scene of an accident.

On Dec. 20, the Leo Club will have a Christmas party for nine Head Start children for whom they have bought gifts.

The Blacksburg High School Forensics Team competed recently in the South Mecklenburg Invitational Tournament in Charlotte, N.C.

Several members placed at the competition. They were: Robert Woodfield, senior, second place in dramatic interpretation; seniors John Schwartz and Alan Wiecynski, third place in duo interpretation; Feras Khan, junior, fifth place in humorous interpretation; Rochelle Gandour, sophomore, sixth place in original oratory; freshman Yoni Schneller, third place in extemporaneous speaking; and freshman Jessica Smith, sixth place in oral interpretation.

Several Giles High School students were named to the District 7 All-District choruses. Selected for the Junior All-District Chorus were Freddi Merix, soprano; Lori Marion and Leslie Perdue, altos; and Ace Godfrey, tenor.

Selected for the Senior All-District Chorus were sopranos Kelly Eaton, Angela Taylor, Sandra Ratcliff, Shannon Bohn andTina Kerr; altos Megan Noble, Holly Johnson and Kellyn Clark; tenor Neal Mustard; and basses William Plummer, Adam Jones, John King and David Dufault.

Thirty-three Shawsville High School students recently received Academic Excellence Awards from the Virginia High School League. The awards program, in its fifth year, recognizes students who participate in Virginia High School League activities and excel in academics.

To be recognized, students must have at least a 3.0 grade-point average on a 4.0 scale during the grading period in which they compete. Students also must be varsity letter winners.

Winners for the third six-week grading period are:

Girls' basketball: Shannon Radford, Staci Harless, Kristi Henson, Molly Nichols, Megan Forster, Sarah Hagood, Jackie Cerva, Sara Trump, Niki Creed.

FOR TEACHERS ONLY

Teachers can earn graduate credit by taking Aquatic Entomology for Elementary Teachers during the spring semester at Virginia Tech.

The course uses a hands-on approach to provide practical information on using insects to teach science. The one-credit course is part of a three-credit series, but teachers can take each course independently without having taken any other entomology course. The course is suitable for recertification.

The class, which begins Jan. 16, meets on five Tuesdays from 6 to 8 p.m., with one Saturday field trip from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

For more information or to register, call Tech's Entomology Department at 231-4010 or Reese Voshell, course instructor, at 231-5707.
