IN SERVICE

Navy Lt. Cmdr. John Joseph recently departed on a five-month Antarctic deployment with Naval Support Force Antarctica. Joseph is one of more than 100 sailors in the Operation Deep Freeze deployment. The sailors are providing support for scientists conducting research while stationed at McMurdo Station, Antarctica.

Joseph is a 1972 graduate of Radford High School. He received a degree in 1979 from Radford University and joined the Navy in May 1982.

Melissa Atkins, a nurse, has reported back to the combat aircraft carrier USS Nimitz, which has left for Hong Kong, Singapore and the Western Pacific for the next six months.

Atkins recently was home visiting her family in Elliston. She is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Richard Atkins Jr. and granddaughter of Mr. and Mrs. Richard Atkins Sr., all of Elliston.

Atkins is a 1992 graduate of Shawsville High School. She joined the Navy in November 1992 after working at the military recruiting office in Christiansburg for several months.

Airman Stephen Johnson has completed basic training at Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonio, Texas. A 1993 graduate of Giles High School, he is the son of Paul and Barbara Johnson of Pearisburg.

Marine Sgt. Larry Haga of Radford recently completed a tank repair technician course taught at the U.S. Army Ordnance Center and School at Aberdeen Proving Ground in Maryland. The program lasts eight weeks.

A 1987 graduate of Pulaski County High School, Haga joined the Marine Corps June 1987. He is the son of Hubert and Brenda Haga of Radford.

Air Force Senior Airman Gregory Tickle has graduated from the airman leadership school at Yokota Air Base, Japan. A firefighter, Tickle is the son of Benny and Elaine Tickle of Dublin.

Marine Cpl. Johnathan Barry has reported to duty with Headquarters and Headquarters Squadron, Marine Corps Air Station, Yuma, Ariz.

A 1992 graduate of Floyd County High School, Barry joined the Marine Corps in December 1992. He is the son of Scott and Lynn Barry of Floyd.

Seaman recruit David Perdue recently completed U.S. Navy basic training at Recruit Training Command, Great Lakes, Ill. Perdue is the son of Earl and Ola Perdue of Dublin. He is a 1993 graduate of Pulaski County High School.

Two area men recently joined the U.S. Army under the Delayed Enlistment Program at the U.S. Army Recruiting Station in Christiansburg:

Bendy Brumfield of Pembroke will report to Fort Benning, Columbus, Ga., to begin basic military training in January. He is the son of Ronald and Violet Brumfield of Pembroke.

David Barnes will report to basic training at Fort Sill, Okla., in January. He is a graduate of Christiansburg High School.

Navy Petty Officer 3rd Class Randall Bales recently completed a six-month overseas deployment aboard the destroyer USS Elliott in the Middle East.

Bales is a 1990 graduate of Pulaski High School. He joined the Navy in March 1992. He is the son of Elizabeth Dehart of Dublin and Randall Bales of Pulaski.
